University of Beautiful Condos

I can not recognize the place I lived less than a decade ago. The buildings, the cafes and restaurants, the atmosphere, the people - all replaced or sanitized, packaged, refined. Thank god for wreck beach and the regulars who have preserved the culture.

You know you can jump on the ferry and go to Van Isle. It's like time travelling back to Van in the 90's or early 2000's. It's underdeveloped and there's earth muffins and superstitious flaky people and deadbeats etc...

Don't you love...

... their ad campaign? Dunno if it still is, but it's "anyone can live at UBC." ZERO units of social housing. ZERO. Not a single one. I guess these lefty academics think what's good for the goose isn't good for the Academic Elite.

But if you look at campus with the right eyes, you see it's always been a big real-estate development project. For some reason, there are those private apartment buildings and houses out in the UEL. I wonder when selling that land off became "operating a University." It wasn't until 2012 that the Registrar of Land Titles, without any fanfare, essentialyl removed the conditions from UBC's land title, the original 1915 grant says the land is for operating a university.

So they started doing all of the RE development when they were still prohibited by law. But one hand washes the other, not like anyone ever successfully sues the University, and if they do get one BCSC judge to side with them, guess which old boys run the BC Court of Appeal?

Why you're complaining so much, 1 bedrooms start at around $650k. So with a nice down payment that's only about $3500 a month. Pocket change!
