Peace on earth

The people in the apartment above me are away for a few days. They are decent neighbours but obviously there is a fair bit of noise in terms of footsteps, cookings, talking, entertainment, etc. You know...normal neighbour noise. Since they have been gone I feel so calm and peaceful. I had no idea what that constant stream of overhead noise was doing to me. Now it's like I am at one with the universe. Is that really all it takes? Wow...how can I afford to live somewhere without people above me? This is amazing!

Stone buildings (also brick, concrete) are far more soundproof.
Wood is an excellent resonator. Thus why it's used extensively in percussion and string instruments, and even in more primitive versions of woodwinds (see that, oh so clevarr). And, oh, yes, high-end sound systems.
Living in a wood structure is not great - they're like very badly engineered sound chambers with lots of hollow resonating cavities.
Find a stone structure to inhabit. Quiet, and also cooler in the summer because stone has more "thermal mass". You won't hear your upstairs neighbors, unless they start construction work on the floor above you.

I pay a TON of rent in Vancouver to live in a top floor suite and I made sure before hand (as sure as I could) that the people next door were long term and didn't have kids and it's a pet-free building. With this i found a VERY, VERY peaceful home that although is expensive is WORTH EVER SINGLE PENNY!
