Vancouver low income housing

I agree that everyone should have affordable housing but I don’t agree with all the low income projects being proposed in Vancouver. If Vancouver is too expensive then move to the suburbs in a low income housing project over there. I don’t understand why people feel it’s their right to live in the city...I lived out in the suburbs before and commuted...it sucks but that’s life.

I live in Burnaby and my rent is half that of Kits and downtown. And I can jump on Skytrain and be downtown in 14 minutes.
Sad with all the thumbs down, apparently the majority on here feel entitled to have the gov't pay for their housing so they can live close to the ocean.

So you don’t agree

Only rich people are alowed to grace the Vancouver city limits.
Rather small and shallow of you.
Why dont we just put poor people in concentration camps somewhere humm
In Hope maybe.
At least the name might give them something.
Hope.

I completely agree with you! I don't understand why get to live in the city and the nice neighbourhoods when you can't afford to do so. If living within your means means commuting then that's life or if you don't like where you are in life you have all the power to change it.

There's a good reason

Many small businesses are having a having a hard time finding anyone to work. Because taxes are so high, they can't afford the kind of salaries that would allow paying the kind of rents that are increasingly commonplace. Those kind of rents aren't exclusive to Vancouver; its spread to other boroughs now too. The people that work these low paying jobs to serve us have little free time as they often work two jobs to make ends meet. And nobody wants a two hour commute on top of it. It's not feasible to exist.
You want food served to you? You want cheap restaurants and cheap stores? You want bakeries, and flower shops and gift shops? Then we need workers who will stay in one job. The cost to rehire each time costs a company 6 to 7 months salary to seek, interview, and train. Every time. Having cheap places close by allows this. And when people have affordable rent, they can be customers to support those businesses. Lack of money due to high rents is bad business for all. No money means no customers. Don't expect all those high end stores to survive, either. There's not enough rich people to keep those storefronts alive, many with money do online shopping anyway.
So it is in the best interests of all of us to have affordable places nearby. It's imperative for the survival of our economy. Any idiot knows anything about economics and business knows that.

Vancouver's already bland and boring. Forcing people who may be musicians or artists out isn't really good for the city. The Scandinavians are trying to create these creative spaces within their cities because they've had these issues with their cities. Already boring cities became unbearably boring. A city needs diversity so it can thrive. Creativity inspires people.

I have to ask....how long ago did you begin renting the Burnaby place? The last time I checked, rentals anywhere in the lower mainland are exorbitant, including Burnaby. In fact, if you check rental costs anywhere in the LM, Okanagan, Sunshine Coast, any “desirable”(as in reasonably accessible) places on the Gulf Islands or Van Island, you’ll find very high rents. You’re lucky if you can find anything at all in fact, which is why so many people are leaving or are having to share with multiple people just to be able to afford to live. If you add in the cost of commuting to the city for work (as so many people have to do) from the surrounding area, the costs become ridiculous. You sound very out of touch, just like the Op.

It's not that

I think it's that people are getting kicked out of their homes and neighbourhoods for no reason other than not being rich.
Once the less privileged make the suburbs cool again, they will be kicked out of there too.
