For my entire adult life I have been ashamed to be a North American and wondered why the rest of the world wants to be like us.

There are some truly amazing things about North American culture. And some deeply fucked things. Nobody has it all right.

Do They?

America is/was a nation of inventors and entrepreneurs. Look around your house and you will many of things were American in origin. The internet and computer you are using now originated in America. The Chinese and Japanese manufacturer them. The problem is that American culture is such a force in dominates everything to pop culture to an over the top brand of capitalism. That brand of capitalism is done. The planet can no longer sustain it so maybe you will get your wish. A more balanced European lifestyle by necessity is on the horizon.

Yea regionalism

certainly has economic variables but we the human race are ultimately one race and one family.

Get Together - the Youngbloods

Love is but a song to sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now
Some may come and some may go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

I think you're out of touch. In today's declining civilization, North America is sinking faster than a stone.

Mind the gap

...the cavernous and constantly spreading chasm in Western credibility and ethics.
The decline accelerated with Vietnam, and really took off from there. The CIA ousted Allende under Nixon in 1973, who was himself pushed out soon after, in 1974. Carter came in the late 70s, and was the last truly ethical, decent human being elected to that post. Which is why he sucked at the job - it was already optimized for douche nozzles, even back then.
Obama was relatively better than Bush or Reagan, but still lots of wars and drone strikes, and Gitmo is still around. Not so good with the promises. The Rapist-In-Chief bullies and abuses friends and allies, gaslights and exploits the masses at home, and sucks up to tyrants and murderers. He even gave nukes to the Saudis. It boggles the mind.
Canada is viewed as ineffectual at best, and a US accessory at worst. Complete with highly publicised, top-level corruption, dog-whistle politics, moralistic grandstanding (oh, the hypocrisy!) and structural dysfunction. Consider: provinces routinely have better relations with other countries, than with each other.
North America is turning into a sh*tshow.
How weird is it when Mexico just kind of fades into the background, even with all its current violence and corruption? When Singapore, Japan, Switzerland and Uruguay seem like the bright, shining lights of good governance in the world?

A recent presentation at an academic conference, posited "an end to democracy". Particularly in the US, but it applies to Canada, too. Also note Brexit, Argentina, Venezuela, the Middle East, (much of) Eastern Europe, (even more of) Africa...
Because the elites have lost the plot, the political classes are corrupt and dysfunctional, and the electorate is mostly ignorant or apathetic - constantly distracted by shiny objects, beguiled by absurd promises, and easily manipulated by self-serving bastards.
"People" were outraged, but offered no viable counterarguments.
Because it's blindingly obvious that the system is ill. The patient is dying from bacterial meningitis, but candy stripers and preachers are in charge, prescribing cough drops, prayer and bed rest.
It'll be decades yet, one hopes. "There is a great deal of ruin in a nation." - Adam Smith

Well then...

....if you truly feel that way, what’s stopping you from leaving for some place you believe is better?

One nice thing about North America, you're allowed to leave if you hate living here.

They just want free medicine and education for their kids.
