Failed climate activist

After 12 years as a commuter cyclist—a one-man carbon sink in fact—I finally got tired of all the well meaning earnest self-sacrificing and bought a car. The first time I've ever bought a car purely for pleasure. Of course I still cycle to work—what could be more insane that sitting in traffic every day?—but when the week-end comes, for the first time in years I have a car waiting in my driveway to take me on whatever adventure I choose.

After a 35 years of environmental consciousness I'm strongly suspecting we're past the point of no return and climate change is accelerating. I gave up owning a car 30 years ago and have been trudging around in the rain or riding in it for years. Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty stupid. It's a miserable existence. The climate in this region is shit. The summer's are way too short and the winters way too long.

I commend you for your efforts! Getting a car to take you to places to explore is definitely a life enhancement. I too always bike or walk wherever I go. I recently bought a vehicle for the same reason and it has added to my life.

You're not a failed climate activist, you're still doing your part.
And you are entitled to "treat" yourself to a car if you're working hard all week.
