Just a random countryside realization

I thought I wanted to retire there but when I visit I realize everyone is just an unemployed dick.

Be careful when you choose a retirement locale

I thought I wanted to retire in a small town on the Island, went there for a month to check it out.
Long story short, I couldn't wait to get back to Vancouver.
The expression I heard to describe the residents in this small town was "potheads" and "almost dead", so happy to be living in an "active" community after that experience.

HA!

This is so true. I had big dreams of living in the country side of California but was faced with the same reality. Another side of the country life is the lack of diversity. I couldn't handle living in an all white community, mostly because the food was so bland and awful.

I grew up in a small town that turned into a logging, fishing, mining boom town in the 1970s. There was a lot of drinking, cocaine and expensive cars and damn little in the way of culture except for when the bars introduced strippers and live bands.

Now it has all died and the place is virtually a ghost town. Later I lived in a smaller mostly fishing (some logging) village. Everyone knew everyone else's business, those that owned boats looked down their noses at those who didn't, affairs were rampant and the biggest cultural event of the year was Salmon Day where everyone got pissed in the beer garden and fought at the dance later.

Fishing died and the place has become a bedroom community for professionals who work a short ferry ride away on Vancouver Island and a "summer place" for Americans and others who've bought there.

Would I move back to either place to retire?

What do you think?
