My financial status

I hope I am not the only one but I have no retirement plan. I am not very talented although most of my life has been spent working hard, trying to stay on top of things financially, but my earning power was never super high and most of my life was spent just paying bills. I have one child that I raised mostly by myself, the father was not living with me although we were married for a long time. He has no money of his own but has been ill most of his life, I also took care of him and now his family takes care of him so our child has to work hard as well. Not only that but I find myself resenting the elite wealthy people who have never had to worry where their next meal was coming from and often share silly anecdotes about their money woes

It's Not Your Fault

So many of us are working very hard but are not in a good financial position to meaningfully save for our retirements. I'm guessing in the future so many of us will require government assistance. I would have rather the government just give us a fair shake instead i.e. increase wages to match inflation, legislate for affordable housing for low/ mid income people, affordable child care and free tuition. The Canadian Government is definitely making it harder for people to succeed and it's no longer about putting in a little elbow grease.

Then don't ever read Saturdays Globe and Mail business section where every week the paper picks a single person or a couple worried about whether they can live a comfortable lifestyle after they retire and hand their problems over to a financial manager to help them out. I stopped looking at this column years ago cause compared to me and most all the people I know that are retired or attempting to retire these people have wealth..houses usually paid off money in the bank all kinds of stocks and bonds . What the fuck do they have to worry about man?? I remember this couple in Toronto had a cool million in the bank, house and cottage paid for of course but their major worry that kept them up at night was could they keep their life style after retirement. Answer was they would be living on around 90 grand a year based on their financial statements. $90 grand a year and I'm surviving on $22 ,000 a year. So dude good luck to you and all of us retired folks just keeping our collective heads above water. The rich ain't got no problems that they can't buy their way out of .

No worries

Don't worry about your retirement. The world will have come to an end long before your retirement ever happens. You should invest in seeds for planting food, and water purifiers.

Working poor

I'm what you call working poor. It's 7 days until pay day, I've got $58 in the bank, and no credit card to fall back on. I do have some RRSP savings through work. Recently decided to use it to pay for dental work because if that isn't planning for retirement for a poor person, I don't know what is.

The lifestyle we have chosen to live, while commendable, is failing. I too live independently, on my own and every year I fall farther behind. The really successful people live in families until they can afford to move on. Some never do. Big family units were a necessity for many generations. We can't go back to big homesteads but maybe it's time to rethink the self based lifestyle and realize that two or more make things easier in so many ways. I'm tired of trying to be a one man show. I'd give just about anything for a trustworthy compatible partner. Financially , physically and emotionally. One is the loneliest number .

Well I will need someone to serve me at IHOP on sundays after retirement. Cheers.

An election is coming up! Vote against the wealthy elite and upset the status quo! Green or NDP! :)
