Where did I go wrong

That moment when you open a can of soup, by yourself, on your 40th birthday. When I look at myself and my life, I do not see the man I wanted to be. The sound of that can opening was not a good moment.

On my 40th and made the mistake of telling the bartender so. He had liked me before thought I was an alright guy- less so afterwards

Well, how you treat yourself is a start. If all you give yourself is a can of soup...not even a meal with effort...then how can your life be better? You owe it to yourself to live life, not exist, and to take initiative, not wait for others to pick up the slack.
Boil some bones, add some veggies, some salt, garlic or even some soy sause and a bit of mustard, cook it at med. heat, remove the bones when done and savour a soup made just for you. Cook it more (stir it continuously at a slow boil and watch so you don't burn it) until it's thick, pour it over meat and you made a homemade sauce. You did that. All you.
The effort and care signals that you are worth the effort. Once you do it with the daily stuff, you expand to other areas of your life. And you should. It's not what you got half as much as how you care about yourself along the way that counts. And if you don't know how, there's a ton of tutorials, articles and info all online to help you do whatever you want.
Put effort and care, and make each moment personal and special to honor you. It's the best gift you can give yourself. 40 is the new 30. You got time, but stop wasting time.

it's not just you

this whole world dimension is flying apart ...( in physics they call it entropy when energy and matter fly apart) ... and we as a human race are all experiencing social entropy. It's part of what the ancient Vedic teachings call the cycles of the Yugas. Main thing IMO is use the time as an opportunity to go deep inside ourselves to work on our priorities. Above all ... positive energy and compassion to self and compassion to all life. Walk good sisters and brothers

40 is the age women fear.

50 is the age men should fear.

You still have time to pull yourself together. Unless you're simply a freaking bum who wants sympathy.

Happy Birthday :)

I'm sorry your 40th was disappointing, mine was too. I hope what you heard was also the sound of your life heading in a happier direction. Best of luck!

I really like this post

Hits home, but embrace your singledom.
It might not be what you envisioned for yourself but that doesn't means it's bad.
Who knows what's in store?

Get used to it. I'm thirty-nine and with the way things are going with my life (no friends, haven't dated in years, unfulfilling corporate worker bee job), I'm well on my way to that lonely moment myself.

I admit

That I laughed. Ruefully! Yours is not a funny situation, but you phrased that really well.

Well, I guess you're having a take inventory moment.

You have: Wit. Realism. Self-awareness. And soup.

Could be worse, man.

Hope you have a better year. Take care.
