Peace

My uncle was admitted to the hospital last week. He suffered from a massive stroke and they put him in the intensive care unit. I’m hoping he’ll pull through and make it, but on the other hand he doesn’t deserve to be a vegetable waiting to die. Somehow I think that maybe the doctors should just let him go in peace so that he won’t suffer anymore. Set him free.

Get that horrible thinking out of your mind. His mind is fine. Unlikely to be in pain. paralysis doen't hurt. It might take awhile but he can recover considerable mobility. If you were hit by a bus, or got some horrible blood cancer tomorrow, should you be left to die, just cause you might be in pain, or a burden? No. Be kind. Be there. Encourage him, don't think of him as dead or dying.

He doesn’t have to

He can legally access Medical Aid In Dying (MAID) but he must be able to verbally consent. I hope for your family that he does recover, but there options. Dying With Dignity is a wonderful organization that provides lots of support and information.

That's why everyone should have an advanced health care plan. Otherwise the default is to just "save life". I hope your uncle can recover, but please everyone make an advanced health care plan. Put it on file with the doctor if you have one. Tell someone you trust where you keep it. Put a copy in a place you can access it.
