Perks

Dear Company, please do not consider the following as adequate employee perks: 1) free parking. You’re just encouraging people to drive. I use the bus and ride my bike. This benefit is useless. 2) free pop. We’re not children at a beach picnic. This benefit is useless. 3) employee of the month plaques. This benefit is useless. Can I pay my bills with free parking, free pop or a decorative frame? No. My landlord does not take such currency. Provide a real perk like a cash bonus or gift card. Stop wasting my time with you cheapening out on me.

Let me get this straight. You feel entitled to "perks". Cuz thats what it sure sounds like. I dont get free parking, free pop, or a fucking employee of the month plaque. Im jist happy to have a fucking job.

On top of that, everybody else should suffer and have to pay for parking because you dont drive.

Youre not very bright are you?

Great post

You’re bang on here, especially regarding the plaque.
Take the money you spent on the plaque and put it towards a gift card.
Well done OP.

Obviously people like money, but there is something to be said for employers who believe morale boosters are important to workplace culture too.

Right On man!! (sort of)

agree with everything but the first one. I hate transit. Its awful in so many ways. I prefer the peace, comfort and security of being in my own car.
At my job, they give "free" food in the breakroom sometimes. Its cheap, gross, inedible crap. A waste of money really.
Gift cards are good though!

Most employers just don't get it; a good employer, a good boss listens and hears.

If you want to build morale, provide a living wage and legitimate growth.

Save all the money spent on "perks" like junk food, games and childish diversions and useless things like even gift cards [landlords don't accept those either ;) ]. And wasting money with "team building" such as parties, lunches and retreats are a poor excuse for investing in better HR policies to support healthy workplaces and investing in educating management to become better leaders who can maximize talent while building morale. All these lazy failures (that manage likes to call "investments") plus the excessive pay upper management can do without for the greater good of the company can all go to what is really needed: decent wages, healthier work conditions and opportunities to maximize talents. Then, create sincere growth plans attached to real opportunities with tangible, practical expressions of gratitude i.e. raises and cash bonuses.

You hired adults, not children.

Treat us with respect and stop insulting us while preying on policy naivety when we come with realistic world responsibilities by demonstrating an inability to understand what makes a job meaningful and a pleasure to be at. Maybe explore which employees need what, and respond accordingly by dialing back the greed a bit. Some like stagnancy and a bonus would be well-received while others come to grow and do well with raises and legitimate growth plans centered on measureable, rewardable metrics.

We know it's a job. Stop being cheap and lazy. Make it meaningful.

Transit only?

If you don’t happen to live close enough to where you work to make using transit or riding a bike realistic, then driving becomes the most sensible option. Try being a parent who has to make multiple stops on the way to and from work, to pick up children and groceries, etc. It actually costs more to take transit if you’ve got more than one child and several zones, not to mention the Herculean effort in lugging all that stuff around on a crowded bus! The idealism and naïveté of so many of you is truly astounding.

It sounds like the employer may not have much to spare but is trying to give as much as they can. It’s rough when it doesn’t align with what you value or need though. I wonder if there is something else of value that you can help them offer that won’t break the bank.
