Can't find employees? You're the problem.

Vancouver is filled with business owners and managers who have no idea how to be a boss, and then complain about how hard it is to fill positions. Don't be surprised if your business has a bad reputation because you are cheap or a jerk. After interviews, follow up, don't ghost. If you are demanding post secondary qualifications, don't offer minimum wage. Know the labour laws. Don't assume everyone is out to get you, because you have terrible people picking skills and are to cheap to hire HR or recruitment specialists. Be a good boss, you'll find good employees. If you can't afford good employees, maybe you shouldn't be in business.

So why did you get fired?

It depends

I was a boss last year and I got lucky with some really great employees. I was well respected by my staff cuz I did everything I could for them and always tried to lead by example. However, there was a few bad apples and one total piece of shit. This guy would be always late, blame everyone else for his failings and was the picture perfect image of a shitty employee. I mostly agree with you Op, you get what you give. But some cunts always seem to slip through and there isn’t much one can do. I’m sure you a perfect employee tho

Unprofessionalism is the standard in Vancouver. The economy is propped up by the real-estate prices, crazy high rents and money laundering.

Right

If you’re looking for people that graduated from University all for only minimum wage, then close your business down and go back to where you came from.

This city

Unfortunately everyone is affected by the astronomical costs of this city. Including employers who have to contend with property taxes and property costs that are sky high, often affecting the ability of small companies to pay living wages. Hence the reason you see so many vacant commercial properties in Vancouver. On the other hand, there’s also the ongoing problem of employers who continue to pay below-market wages /salaries because they haven’t kept up with the realities their employees are facing due to what’s happened over the past 20 years. One of the reasons Vancouver is rated as one of the most unaffordable cities in the world is due to the fact that our average wages aren’t high enough to be able to afford to live here. Unless employers start wising up they will not be able to attract quality employees, because the bottom line is that people need more money or they’re going to have to leave.

This isn’t the actual problem

This city is completely imbalanced in so many ways. Places pay minimum wage because the structure of the business is built that way and people don’t apply for minimum wage jobs because the cost of living is so high. Thank the government for this mess were in, not the employers who are just trying to make ends meet in this garbage dump of a situation (just like all of the employees are!). I agree, I have had some TERRIBLE bosses, but they aren’t the only ones at fault here.

This is an amazing read

A huge part of Vancouver jobs, are people wanting to start small businesses or take over small businesses for good reasons, but not understanding how to be bosses to actual employees more than cutting a minimum wage pay cheque.
