Vancouver taxi companies suck
posted January 2nd, 2020 at 2:22 PM
After leaving a friend's party at 2am on New Years night, I was surprised - and glad - to see a decent number of cabs on the streets. We hailed one which stopped but as soon as we tried the doors, we found they were locked and he drove off. A couple minutes later, another slowed down just long enough to say that he didn't "want guys in his cab".
I haven't supported ride-sharing in the past because I believe a certain amount of regulation is needed for passenger safety. But it's obvious that the cab companies in this city don't follow regulations anyways. So fuck it. And them. Ride-sharing can't come soon enough. I want to see all those shitty entitled taxi companies eat it financially. Had they just offered a decent service, I would still be on their side.

They can all go broke, AFAIC and give employment chances to others.
I will likely get into it, not so much for the money but to get out of the house and meet people.

With zero actual steps in the vetting of new drivers, ride-sharing services are safer than ever! ...
Seriously though, at least cab companies are held accountable and operate under a framework that offers a modicum of at least perceived safety through a real vetting.
The result if you don't vet properly?

Uber and lyft exploit their drivers vs Vancouver's taxi services exploiting their patrons.

I’ve been taking taxis about twice per month for a year, and less frequently for the last 10 years in Vancouver. In that time I can’t recall any bad experiences. Taxi drivers, like bus drivers, have to deal with some terrible customers... some don’t pay, others leave a mess, some pass out or throw up, and unfortunately there are those who are verbally or physically abusive. Make it a Friday or Saturday night with drunk folks and it’s ten times worse. I think most of us wouldn’t be smiling if we had to do this job.
Ride Share JUST AS safe as CABS

To the people that keep saying ride share drivers are less safe than taxis read the law. Ride share has to meet the same safety requirements
Friend of mines a taxi driver, he was not vetted for being a good guy with a good attitude, they did not care about that. All the wanted from him when he was hired was fill out the paperwork, provide a criminal record check, and meet the driving history requirements........ and you people are saying thats different than ride share companies?? ummm no its not, here are the ride share requirements
DRIVER REQUIREMENTS FOR RIDE SHARE
Valid class 1, 2 or 4 commercial driver's licence.
21 or older.
3 years driving history in British Columbia.
Pass an annual driver screening, which includes a review of your driving history and criminal background check.
Any smartphone that can download and run the Lyft Driver app.
