I don’t fit in

I don’t really like stuff like industrial degradation if the environment but don’t like easy answers from enviro protestors who happen to attend the same parties as me. They told me disposable plastic bags must be banned but I told them the majority of plastic bags are produced to ship the goods to the consumer and nobody cares about that. Plus, people would have to buy disposable garbage bags to throw out their garbage Instead of using the ones from the grocery store. Pretty sure industrial regulation and common sense are needed here instead of enviro slogans. The protestors are so cool. Well back to class I go to actually learn this shit in detail.

We are taking the wrong approach.

Banning single use plastic, recycling, and even eliminating CO2 emissions will do absolutely no good unless we tackle the root of the problem. There are many people on the earth. Until we do something about this all the rest will only delay the inevitable. How many billions of people can the earth support? All the technology in the world cannot erase the effects of unlimited growth.

Environmentalism is simply people acting like big babies. It's just a giant "Mommy Mommy" from godless, terrified young adults.

You are not...

... a zombie. Congratulations. We live in a hypnocracy, cracy from the Greek for Rule, and hypnos from the Greek for Sleep. People talking about banning plastic bags have a dream, a dream that won't amount to much, but it is their dream, and dreams are not rational.

Paperboy

I grew up in the sixties. It was a time when plastic packaging was rare. We used a lot of paper and wood instead. The harvesting of wood to make paper is very energy intensive and the production of paper uses massive amounts of chemicals. Howe Sound and the Fraser River were once covered with soap suds as a result of paper production. Banning plastics and moving back to paper is a cheap political ploy and a case of a cure that is worse than the disease.

Overpopulation

This is the ONLY issue. Plastic straws and pipelines are all red herrings as asia and africa expand beyond all of this planets resources.

Partially correct

I agree that the current “jump on the bandwagon” attitude isn’t the way to go. As a senior I’ve been through the gamut of the paper v. plastic debate more than once. Just like the gas v. electric debate. No matter what product we use or how it’s produced, energy of some type has to be used. Each of the options has pros and cons. I agree that the biggest problem we’ve got right now isn’t in North America. It’s in countries like China, India, and Africa, where overpopulation is rife, and the will and / or ability to take the extreme measures necessary regarding the environment are completely lacking. No matter what we do here on this continent, nothing will improve unless the biggest polluters join in the fight. Given the circumstances in those countries, I’m not exactly filled with hope for the future of this planet.

It's a form of Normalcy bias. I've trained myself also to be concerned about the environment in such a conventional way for so long, that the fact that we will hit 4°C of global warming and that will lead to substantial species extinctions, large risks to global and regional food security, and the risk of irreversibly destabilizing Greenland's massive ice sheet etc... all this leading to a series of cascading environmental events that lead to a major cull in the earth's population and I still won't buy a plastic bag for a nickle. That's my normal. Plastic straws and bags are bad.

Think tech

They're working on vegetable/vegetation sourced biodegradable bioplastics that don't use any petroleum, and is manufactured in an environmentally sound manner. So have hope, because a solution is at hand.

Single use plastics

Aren't the final solution, but part of the equation. It's about changing mentalities more than being the final nail in the coffin. And what's the big deal? Bring a bag with you, problem solved. It's a very small ask to help make changes in how we treat our planet. Bring a mug, use re-useable cutlery, stop the throw away culture of everything we use.
