I suspect my co-workers think I am a bum because I wear Mark's Work Wearhouse casual clothing to work. Sweaters and stuff..
Why would anyone overdress to work at a university? Especially on the west coast! How pompous.

When I worked there everyone was dressed like they were about to go hiking and I felt over dressed. .. so don't worry.

They probably don't think you're a bum and never give a second thought to what you wear to work. You however, sound like a judgemental ass.

We wear whatever we want. We're cool and hip.

What is overdressed to you is what I actually like to wear. Judge not, for you judge yourself.

Signalling. You would think people working in an institution for higher learning would have the self-awareness to see that there overcompensating for whatever wrong with them and the system. Universities have been hijacked by the relentless pursuit of money and prestige, including chasing rankings that they know are deeply flawed.
That university and this city is off the rails. It thinks it's earned all the wealth that been poured into the region from people speculating on real estate and foreign students paying astronomical tuition. It's forgotten it's a second tier city that doesn't have a proper business district or an arts community. This is not San Francisco or LA and UBC isn't Berkeley. Snap out of it people, you're delusional. Vancouver become a facade of bullshit and it's going to come crashing down when the next Great Depression comes along because that one's going to include China and Canada.

Hah, this guy really made my day! I blame the BC Liberals for it though. 16 years of them is a long time. I doubt we can get enough successive socialist governments to (a) beat that timespan, and (b) undo the damage to the social fabric (and it's irrelevant whether it takes less or more than 16 years).
If I'm correct on that doubt then something is wrong with the people here and maybe it's time to GTFO. I don't KNOW though. Lately I've seen charity boards with conservative types who are unrivalled in the experience they bring. This IS new.
I hope to be wrong. I'd be relieved if I were.
UBC used to be a proper university.

Some of us have all kinds of strikes against us already, so have to dress certain ways in order to be taken seriously enough to do the crap required of us. If not for that, I wouldn't own a single blazer, and I have like 5.
you suspect, hm?

It's always funny when someone suspects someone is judging them
