I'd rather partner with someone who wants to move away, than settle here and deal with the increasingly broken order and ailing social fabric of this place. As long as we leave well before the inevitable economic reckoning, and the subsequent ugly fallout... I used to think Canada is better run, but that was a decade ago. Watching things go to pieces lately (Bombardier and the train blockades are just the latest), the next 20 years are going to be awkward. A friend is in the Netherlands right now. Hardly a cheap destination. And she's a social worker, so not anything like wealthy. But life is better there, even with the much higher taxes. And the tiny country is rated 13th most innovative in the world, only 4 places behind the US. Canada isn't even in the top 20. Seems that software, tourism, tchotchkes, real estate and weed do not promise a bright future. Because those things can be done most anywhere, so doing them in one of the world’s most expensive places is strictly a transitional step. Automation's taking off, and teleworking is going to go much bigger after another pandemic or three. Canada is increasingly a political, logistical and regulatory nightmare. Even the farmers were struggling to get their products to market, and that was before the latest outbreak of slacktivism... This is basic stuff - food logistics. Which humans have been doing for millennia. The writing is on the wall, for those that can see it. Enjoy your toy. I'll send you a postcard and some fun-flavored lube. Or not.
