Does Freedom die here?

I'm at odds why is so many people are in such a hurry to lose their rights and freedom all of sudden without so much as a thought. Freedom of speech , wether you like what another person says or doesn't you owe it to them and honour their right to free speech because our Fathers died to protect that right. Holding one opinion only creates a vacuum where only those thoughts can exist thus creating an island which alienates everyone else except those who are deemed likeminded. . Those who choose to live by cancel culture are only one misstep away from being cancelled themselves and you simply don't know everything even though your phone might tell you that you do. I do not want my kids to live in a world where they aren't free to speak without being attacked online from mobs of arm chair generals who live on the currency of loneliness and fear.

Can you be clear?

There is cancel culture and there are restrictions due to a pandemic. These seem like two different things. If you are talking about the social scene, yes, gotchya. If you are talking about restrictions due to the pandemic, I don't get it. I'm glad for the restrictions in this case. It's about being cooperative and socially responsible.

I'm not sure I understand you. The right to free speech is part of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, subject to "reasonable" restrictions, for which the court system sets a fairly high bar. Yes, that gives some latitude for abuse. But my point is this - don't people who disagree with you also have the right to free speech? Subject of course to not going over the line of uttering threats or encouraging hatred on the basis of your gender, orientation, ethnicity or religion? I often hear people raising your argument, but they often seem to feel that nobody should have the free speech right to counter their own opinions. Feel free to clarify.

Good for you

Go exercise your “freedom” and say anything the fuck you want. Receive the repercussions. It’s as simple as that. You might be canceled. You might be considered a hero. There are reasons why people are socially ostracized. Primates even socially ostracize those individuals who flout social norms.

Are underestimating just how bad things are right now. Worst loss of freedom since WW2. Difference is that its customary to give up freedom to fight a war to protect freedom---the 'new normal' public relations is truly frightening.

It's funny hearing all these righteous folks point fingers and tell people they're wrong, wrong, wrong. Since when did everything go all black vs. white in the intellectual realm? Well, when you involve emotions (especially FEAR) then all rational thought is left on the sideline. What a reactionary bunch of clowns we've become. Down arrow!! How dare you!!!
Doesn't anyone remember how we were told war (soon to be perpetual) was necessary after 9/11 and increased surveillance over everyone was vital to protect us from the scary terrorists? We were all scared shitless so yeah whatever you need Big Brother. Anyone opposing was a traitor or with the enemy.
Now it's the same play with cold virus Corona, our protectors are back to save us again and anyone who's not down with the program is a Covidiot. Point your fingers! Call them names!! Feel good about yourselves - your obedience is saving lives! Those who don't comply are the enemy!
The new normal...the new normal...the new normal. You can read it in all western media outlets from the UK to Canada. What a great campaign it's been too! People are bending over backwards to welcome the new normal with open arms. Scared to go grocery shopping?...I never thought we'd fall this far but there you have it, fear is a wicked thing and easily manipulated. Cue the down arrows and name calling, let it flow people...let that anger fly!
Free speech but only if I agree with it!!

I don't think you really understand what Freedom of Speech actually means. It does not mean you are free to say whatever you want without consequence. It means that the _government_ will not persecute you for what you say.
Note, though, that we've never had unrestricted free speech in Canada. You cannot, for example, shout "Fire!" in a crowded theatre.
If your issue is just with "cancel culture" then you're not really dealing with a free speech issue. You're dealing with a culture of intolerance, poor discourse ability, and also a backlash to the recent phenomenon of "all opinions are equal".

Freedom of Expression

May 12, 2020 at 11:31am

Ugh, we do not have the right to free speech in Canada. We have freedom of expression. There's a difference.

Do yourself a favour and pull yourself out of whatever bubble you're floating in and expand your awareness. Learn something new. Challenge your worldview. Expose yourself to the expressions of others. There's a whole lotta freedom to be had.

Not sure

What this is referring to in particular, but what concerns me is this argument is often used by purveyors of hate. Hate speak is unacceptable. If you are trying to defend hate speak with rabble rousing about how we're all giving up our rights without a specific example, then I would find this offensive. That is my opinion expressed here freely, without obstruction.

Agreed

The anti freedom of speech people are the new fascists of our time
