I’d be there

I’m not even African American but I would go and protest in the US because how can people take the racial inequalities sitting down anymore? I support them and would be alongside them. The racial cruelty is sickening.

How do Canadians feel about Americans coming to Canada to protest issues they find within Canada?

So you are under the impression that people have only recently “stood up” to racial inequality? Everyone has just been sitting around until just a few days ago? You think protesting is going to stop systemic racism? You’re sickened by racism in the U.S. but are just fine with racism in Canada?

We could use your help here too. Unfortunately, racist attitudes in Canada still exist.

Cannot long stand. Yet the civil war has never stopped. Does that country exist because of or for the corporate military?

From my work, I know first hand that racism is embedded in Canada. Racism against Indigenous peoples is older than Canada's been Canada. Another example is the countless legally immigrated people across all provinces who's employers take big advantage of them. They prey on their vulnerability; of not knowing employment regulations, english as a second language; and they perpetrate a lie that they can "revoke"a work visa if the employee doesn't do what they want, which is usually work horrendous hours with no breaks to rest or eat, low pay, suck up constant abuse and harassment. Made-up threats of being "sent back" are rampant. By the time these people reach someone in a role such as mine, they are so scared that they break down, are chronically anxious and very disillusioned. They often say the same thing at some point; "...but this is Canada, it's not supposed to be like this...." I want to say "sorry but the brochure lied" but I don't. Comparatively, Canada is a solid country globally but unfortunately, racist abuse towards people born here and people from abroad lives well within our borders and has done for a long time. Let's start here.

Canada is riddled with racism then you have homework to do yet. Go talk to any of your minority friends. Ask someone who was born and raised outside the lower mainland in a small town or a newcomer either from years ago or now what their experience has been like. It might shake you. It might not look like America but it doesn’t mean it hasn’t existed just the same. Just because you can’t do something there doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of the change. Maybe you didn’t hear about the vancouver teacher who only received a 3 day suspension for ALL his racist comments to students last week? Don’t just check your privilege, use it. Oh, and congratulations on not being black. - Your minority friend.
