Ohhh yeah, money!

The idea of Stanley Park being car-free scares the city of Van, which is in it for the money.

Stanley Park "Parks Pass"

May 1, 2020 at 2:54pm

How about local Vancouverites show their library card or their community centre pass to get into Stanley Park for free; and all tour bus operators and their clients; joy riders from outlying regions; private tour companies; commercial photographers, etc. pay a user fee of about what VanDusen Gardens charges - say $8 - $12per person. That would generate a ton of money for the City of Vancouver while not penalizing Vancouver folks whose taxes support the maintenance of the park. There are many regional businesses that benefit from the park without putting anything into it and they make tons of money off of using Stanley Park as a tourist attraction on their "circuit." There's nothing wrong with this, but they should compensate the City of Vancouver for this substantial priviledge with an entry fee for non-Vancouver residents.

Those oinkers are just filling up their piggie banks so they can eat rich ham dinners each night.... and then play identity politics to make them look good.

Oh, I’m so sorry, but...

...you’re going to have to grow up. Honestly, so many of these types of posts sound like they’re written by 20 year olds. I have nothing against 20 year olds, but they have so little actual life experience, so they simply can’t comprehend how things really work. I remember very well how obnoxious I was at that age; I knew it all and no one older could possibly change my mind. Then I grew up. I came to understand how the system works. How things that appeared to be so simple on the surface, are anything but when you scratch it. So sure, Stanley Park would be awesome if it was free like it once was (for the first 30 or so years of my life), but the reality is that a million or two more people have moved here in the last 30 years, so NOTHING is going to be free here ever again. Also, nothing will ever be as beautiful as it used to be before over-population became the new normal. I’m probably even sadder about that than you are, because I grew up here for the past 67 years.

The city

We know who's buttering the bread. It's the car owners who are bucking up the bulk of the freight for the bike lanes and bridge maintenance. Or did you think that we all work for free. Or that the street signs are useless and another foolish expenditure. If only the visitors would pick up their own garbage maybe we could lay a few guys off. Everything's still on the table so be careful what you wish for.
