Connections

Ok, I have a job still. Fortunate yes. Person X lost their job. They never bothered to talk to me while we worked in the same office space. I would pick up the area’s packages and bring them up to people from shipping, just cuz. None of those folks ever returned the favour; just stuck in their cliques and never looked up. So Person X now wants to add me as a LinkedIn connection. To that person: you failed to make any positive impression on me while we physically worked together, and you’re not going to impress me in the digital world either because we’re not even friends. It sucks that you lost your job, but I’d rather help other people, businesses and animals over you.

I love hearing "karma" stories.
Person X is a douche and is unemployed, sometimes things work out just right.

Pretentious white-collar professional

In these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to cultivate a positive professional reputation on LinkedIn, Glassdoor and other social networks geared towards industry practitioners. Part and parcel in that effort is exercising due diligence whenever there are unsolicited requests from random individuals to be added as a connection. Having such persons of dubious repute added to your network without considering what they bring to the table and how they can contribute to your goals has the potential to, at a minimum, cause you annoying distractions as they relentlessly beg for endorsements on job skills they may not possess or are very adept at -- and at worst, destroy your credibility and irreversibly damage your professional reputation and personal brand due to you being perceived by others as associated with such undesirables.

As a matter of policy, I do not accept requests to connect unless I have had at least three (3) meaningful and positive interactions with the individual in question, and I deem them to be worthy of character and professionalism.

All the best to you in your career endeavours.

I believe I once lost an opportunity for a job I applied for at a large BC corporation because I let it slip that I heard about the opportunity from a friend that worked there. Unfortunately the friend was considered a bad employee and they worked in a very junior position for their entire working life. I was a senior level professional but we are definitely judged by the company we keep when it comes to job hunting unfortunately.
