OMG -

I can't afford an apartment in the west end despite going to work like a robot for 30 years. I found one I could but no dogs allowed and told the agent "well, if my bid is accepted I will put my dog to sleep" and she said "do you want to see the apartment?" Whoa Vancouver. You are more shallow than I thought. Big Time. I'm moving back south.

So many people say they "can't afford" to live in the West End. But what does that mean, really? As in they only want to spend 30% on their wage on rent so it's unaffordable?

The original name for the NDP was CCF Co-operative Canada Federation. How will that work to ease our present conundrums. I ain't got all the answers but feel its time for co-op living. I'm not talking about delusions of 'utopian' society' or 'hippy communes.' Hey! half of Vancouver now lives in a form of co-op housing called condominiums which are, or they are supposed to be, by the rules and bylaws of the Strata Act, coherent and self governing. Sometimes they are and sometimes they are not because people buy into condos that do not have the sufficient mutual vision and bylaws to insure the local community of neighbours live in sufficient balance between the needs of privacy and community. There is a start of a housing co-op movement in BC that is meeting great success. Suggest we take it to the next level.

Vancouver's a potemkin village with potemkin people. Pull the facade back and there's nothing there.

Having been on a strata and having worked in a number of non-profits, my view is that most people are not broad-minded enough to use a council/deliberative assembly properly. They tend to all believe they are right, they don't respect the magic of deliberation, e.g., we all have our say and then we vote, and we all submit to the vote, they see voting as a way to get their way, not as the magical process that it is.

All of this is going to go away pretty much once the cellphone generation comes to the fore, it already is amongst the older people addicted to social media, just look what goes on with people who dissent from the dominant media narrative---the whole point to a co-op or deliberative assembly is that not every individual needs to hold the same opinion, we all say our piece, then we vote, the idea isn't that anyone who dissented from the majority was 'wrong.'

It's not just the west end, these days you'd be hard-pressed to find an affordable unit even in the outskirts of Surrey.
Co-ops are not an option for many people. I myself have a mental illness so I know that no co-op would ever accept me, even though I am quiet, clean and always pay rent on time. So I don't even bother to apply; I just stay in my moldy, broken-down, insect-infested shoebox and remind myself how lucky I am to live in the greatest city in the world. Hey, at least I have a roof over my head right??

Is it really about being able to afford to live in the West End, or is it about the dog? (It's about the dog.)

To the CCF / NDP person, CCF stands for Cooperative Commonwealth Federation and the NDP was founded out of the merger between them and the CLC.
