What is the point

I spent over an hour on the phone tonight with a loved one who lives in the US. This person talked the *entire* time about Trump. Didn't ask me how I'm doing. Didn't congratulate me on my new career. What is the point of engaging with one another if we don't have real conversations? What is the point of any of this unless we lift each other up, pay attention to one another? Please, don't talk my ear off about how much the world sucks. I read the news; I know how much it sucks. Ask me what I'm doing about it. Tell me what you're doing about it. Learn about me and my life, learn about the people I'm trying to help. Otherwise — what is the bloody point??

I’m no fancy big city lawyer but why are you bringing that stuff here? If you don’t want to hear it, why do we? Lend a shoulder to lean on and listen next time.

As an American, allow me to present an opinion on why your friend is consumed by the need to talk about Trump.
BECAUSE THIS IS FUCKING INSANE.
Things are so chaotic and bewildering at this point that unless you're down here, it's really hard to fathom how this feels.
Your friend doesn't want to ask about your life, because they most likely can't right now, as they are living in a state of daily fucking trauma.
FFS. Get out of your bubble and be a friend, and suck it up and let them vent.
Why do so many people...

...allow Trump to occupy so much real estate in their small, insignificant minds?
What seriously?

The world is at a tipping point of civil war and nuclear annihilation, the entire future of humanity lays in the balance, and you want to talk about some new fluffy job you have going on in your life? You need to get your priorities straight.

You really should see a psychiatrist to help you deal with your Trump Derangement Syndrome...

Who's a bigger fool? The fool or the fool who follows the fool? The derangement syndrome is absolutely on those deranged enough to support that fraud conman in any way.

When people want to obsess about Trump, console yourself with the knowledge that these people are realizing for the first time the power of the executive branch, the warmongering default of American foreign policy (because weapons sales is one of the biggest industries they have left), and, in a roundabout way, how the degree to which media outlets are excitably partisan. So we can thank Trump, in a way, for being such a blundering cartoon. It's ok, in a year or five years he'll be gone and the US can return to profitable warmongering without any civil unrest.

Someone once said something to me after she had a really boring date where a guy just talked about himself the entire time. She said, "I just him talk because I could tell he needed it." I've been that person, too. I couldn't ask someone about themself because I was miserable and needed to just get it out and feel heard and validated. I would tell anyone who would listen. I cringe to think of how open I was. But at least now I have empathy for it. Give this person some time before the next chat, but just remember that they're suffering right now and don't have the emotional capacity to be a good friend. It'll come back around, though, if you're patient.
