White Privilege

George Floyd was killed over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill. I once gave a $20 bill to a store and they gave it back and told me they thought it was fake. We both had a good chuckle. I went on with my day and he as well. I never realized that white privilege is what saved me.

In Canada or the US? If you were in the states, the police might have been called.

Tragic outcome and yes, based on your appearance, if you look a certain way the police are called and if you look another way, you get away without consequence and live another day. I’m Asian and I accidentally passed a counterfeit bill that was circulating and I just so happened to have it in my wallet from another financial transaction before. I can’t remember exactly what happened but I recall feeling stupid that I somehow ended up with it. No police were called. When I first heard of George Floyd having a counterfeit $20, i felt like it can happen to anyone like it did to me. The fact that Chauvin was training rookies makes me fucking sick.

No it's because...

you live in a completely different country and different society with a different history and different constitution. Different police force with different training. Nothing to do with your race.

It has very little to do with skin colour.

I was once at my local grocery store, and I had brown a beard and was dressed in fashionably ripped clothing, but I am white as a lily.

I legit couldn't find what I wanted because it had been moved, so I was up and down the same aisles several times. I bought what I wanted, then a brown-skinned security guard told me to FREEZE and that I had stolen some sausage.

This is all a ruse, if you are a black man driving a BMW in a business suit no police officer is going to shoot you unless you, like pull a gun on him, but please, continue to get your views from politically motivated entertainment product on TV.

“It has very little to do with skin colour.”
— someone who is “white as a lily”

Time to stop talking and start listening, bud. I’d like to hear from the Black man in the BMW with a business suit that you reference to see if your claims about police targeting hold up.

I worked in retail for years and saw a lot of fake bills, usually the policy was to keep the bill and send the person on their way. Calling the police would just mean a lecture on wasting police time. I'm guessing it's a US vs Canadian thing. The idea of murdering someone for passing a fake bill is mind-bogglingly insane to me, I know we have racism in Canada too but holy fuck!

White privilege didn't work for me

When a counterfeit bill came into my possession and I tried passing it without knowing what it was my whiteness didn't save me from having the authorities called.

Privilege

I'm sure everyone has privilege to some extent and carry more favor among their own race but mostly among their own financial social class above all else. You're either to be pampered as part of the nobility, or walked on as part of the common rabble.

I had a counterfeit $5 once (no idea where I got it), and just passed it along to a Starbucks, or something. I felt some anxiety doing it, but it is what it is. I've worked at grocery stores, and they generally don't perk up unless you pass off a bunch of fakes. Besides, most people don't know what to look for.

Call it what it is

What everyone is presently calling “white privilege” is a well understood psychological concept we are all guilty of called in group bias. It can be based on skin colour, language, social standing, etc etc. Human beings will give preferential treatment to those we perceive as belonging to the same group as ourself. It doesn’t just happen to white people and in fact won’t happen to white people who find them-self in places they aren’t the majority. The sooner we ditch this concept that white people universally get special and quantifiable benefits simply because they are white the better.
