Sick of construction

For the last 2 years, the office building I work in has been sandwiched between construction sites, including construction that directly affects my building. The noise has been constant (my work issued us crapping noise-reduction headphones) and there were new sidewalk and road closures almost daily. Now working from home, I have to deal with more construction. Firstly, the water pipes in my condo building were replaced over the course of five months. Another building two down from my residence has on-again, off-again construction for the past four years. They managed to start the main project of adding two new stories which involves riveting many, many steel beams. All of this noise is on top of the garbage trucks that seem to mostly run between 10pm to midnight and 5am to 10am every day and the local unhinged population who seem to need to yell at everyone and everything. I am so sick of noise. I just need it to go away.

I feel your pain

Been living across from a construction site for 18 months and it's painful at the best of times, but even worse after working from home for 4 months. They've recently decided to start blaring music all day which makes conference calls reeeeeal fun. And I'm sure is an added delight for those night shift workers who live in the building. One of my favorite moments was the day they decided to drag a full-size portacabin along the street - never heard anything quite like it.

Tires

Construction has damaged my tires several times between the metal plates and buts of crap on the road. The noise, debris and detours and not cool.

Historically consistent

A recent book by a local journalist, about the last century of Vancouver history, is instructive.
The research reveals the absolute control of the place by the real estate business. It dominates and dictates absolutely everything here, from holidays to naming conventions (streets and neighborhoods), from zoning and design to planning of services, to politics and policies.
Developers own this town, and run it to "write themselves checks", in the words of a mortgage broker I used to know. And they always have. Been that way for a hundred years. Expect more of the same.
If you hate noise, crowding and construction, Vancouver is not the place for you.

From home, and if you can...move. I did, and escaping this over run rat race has been awesome.

No End in Site

Construction in Vancouver will never end. It is a poorly built infrastructure for the mass amounts of people who’ve decided to relocate here. It was only ever meant to be a small town.
