Young Man

The cashier at a retail outlet took my payment for my goods. He was behind the plexiglass without a mask which is fine. I asked how he was doing with all of this. He didn't know what I was talking about. I said, how are you doing with the pandemic? How are you making out? He replied as if nothing was going on and said he'd read that the virus was becoming weaker. He didn't seem to be too worried. I explained that this wasn't the case and that there's a lot of misinformation out there and that people are still dying, more young people getting it. I hope he listened to me, too young to get sick and potentially die. Staff walking around without masks at another drug store too, coming very close to customers and myself. Why aren't people taking this more seriously?

He loved getting a lecture from the armchair expert.

Expert? Anyone who is at least semiconscious right now knows all of this to be true.

An unfortunate trend

After reading the news it’s become clear that we have mostly young people to blame for the fact that we’ve got more cases on the rise again. I understand how frustrating it is, but unless you people in your teens, 20’s, and 30’s smarten up, we’re all going to be back on lockdown. Show some maturity and some patience ffs.

I wouldn't blame young people.

Maybe two percent of people I've seen in my hood have been wearing masks, and being under 35 here is rare. I went to Walmart this morning and every employee looked like they were in their late 50's, no one wearing masks. I think some people are more worried about their immediate needs: paying bills, etc. than their health - makes no sense to me. Or they don't think they'll get it. Or maybe they want to get it so they can have some time off?

I didn't mean to imply I am targeting just young people. This is going on everywhere now in stores, young or old, customers and staff alike. I guess I was just shocked the gentleman didn't seem to be bothered much by the pandemic.
And @I Bet - no armchair expert here. I wear my mask everywhere. btw we think we had the virus at the end of Feb to early March. All the symptoms were the same. Not taking any chances so STILL wearing my mask, practicing social distancing and washing hands so much they're cracking. Willing to do this to keep YOU safe, too. A very small sacrifice in the scheme of things.

Please think before asking deeply invasive questions

Maybe he has reached his saturation point of having to have the same conversation over and over again. Have you ever worked in customer service? Can you imagine how many times he is being asked the questions you were asking ... “how are you making out during the pandemic?” What an incredibly personal question! You are maybe seeking connections, but someone processing your transaction is doing his or her job. They are at work during a pandemic. Leave them alone. Smile. Be kind. Talk about the weather if you have to ask questions, and always be prepared to hear answers you might not like if you must grill service workers.

Nope. Not a personal question OR deeply invasive but an enquiry over his general well being from a friendly person. You are taking this too personally. He obviously hadn't been asked this given by his response and it was a good and positive interaction. I have been a front line worker myself in a variety of different environments.
BTW, how are YOU doing??

We can only control what we do NOT what others do...

I've worked in retail and believe me, in a 9hr day about 100 people or more will come through your till, pre-pandemic, it would be draining with people projecting their shitty day onto you. Your fear of people not taking it seriously is not the cashier's responsibility to take on and you know what? It's good he didn't seemed too worried because if he was freaked out, he wouldn't be serving you to make an in person purchase during a pandemic. I would have kept my response short too, cashiers do not make a lot; it's not worth the energy getting into a conversation let alone going online and seeing MORE pandemic related posts. It may have seemed like a positive interaction for YOU hoping he LISTENED. It's great that you are following protocols from the CDC for the safety of yourself and others, but the CDC isn't asking us to question essential workers on the job what they think about this whole thing, if they need help there are Direct Supervisors educating them, HR, Work Safe BC, and mental health support lines and resources.

I appreciate everyone's opinions but some of you are reading and making waaaay too much out of this. It wasn't a lengthy exchange and it was positive both ways so chill AND wear your masks where necessary. We should be uplifting each other through this pandemic. Stay safe!
