Death by Swan Boat

One time my now wife and I rented one of those recreational peddle-powered swan boats at a lake. We were somewhere in SE Asia (I'd have to dig through my photos to remember where). By the time we reached the middle of the lake we realized the boat was slowly taking on water. Soon after fish started jumping around the boat. Since we seemed to be sinking we immediately imagined they were probably piranha and we peddled as fast as we could. The faster we peddled the faster the fish flew all around us. My wife was screaming in terror as fish shot past our faces. Anyway, funny in retrospect. They probably weren't *actually* piranha.

Sounds great, good for you. You chose life and you're reflecting on that adventure. I was crossing a street in Vietnam and was struck by a truck mirror that spun me around only to come so close to another truck and could almost touch that truck with my nose. I was alive. If I died there, I would have died living my life as opposed another year of some lame sh#t like decorating an apartment or doing another lap of the sea wall.

Those memories will be the best ones when you hit your late 50s or 60s. The years you were really living your life.

as they are native to the Amazon.

But they have been discovered in the Kaptai Lake in southeast Bangladesh and have been spotted in the Lijiang River in China.... according to Wikipedia.

Finally an honest confession not designed to discredit other Vancouverites. Bravo

Shark!

I was swimming in a bay in Australia that was apparently a breeding ground for sharks, when I caught a dark shadow out of the corner of my eye. I swam frantically to the shore before I realized it was my own shadow... We were camping in that bay and someone told me that the year before a woman had died from a spider bite. Gotta love Aus!

Not exactly. Just because someone isn’t traveling around the world doesn’t mean that they’re either lame or “not living” their life. Profound and amazing experiences can and do occur all the time, when we’re just going about our daily routines. The trick is to be present in the moments that make up our time here on this earth. Whether you’re decorating your place, going for a walk in your neighbourhood, giving your dog a bath, or whatever you might be doing. If you really believe that you’re not living unless you’re in some foreign country, then what are all those people who are just going about their daily lives doing in those places that you’re travelling in? Do you feel superior to someone who either can’t afford to travel or simply doesn’t want to? Those tiny villages in far-off lands filled with people who might live their entire lives within that small place can provide a myriad of amazing experiences for anyone who’s able to notice. It’s often the smallest things that can enrich your life in ways you’ll only notice if you’re paying attention.

No one under 40 should live in Vancouver. It is nice when you old, broken down and reminiscing about one's youth.
