My age is showing

I am on LinkedIn all day at work instead of Facebook. Yep. I know.

Maturity is not age

But people tend to confuse the two.
Those who want to get sh*t done, use LinkedIn. Definitely more meaningful (or not as meaningless?) than the alternatives, though Twitter has its moments.
Those who want sh*t done to them, use Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tinder, Snapchat, TikTok, etcetera. They often wind up with social diseases, addiction, mental health issues, relationship problems, and related, or subsequent, dysfunctions. Mostly, not better off for time spent.

I think it was Plato who noted that getting useful work done was a benefit of maturity - one is no longer quite so distracted by one's ego (or insecurity) and libido. I look forward to this, as my libido is still very much a problem.

I think that’s more about career/job anxiety than age though.

Holy shit, this is the raw analysis I come here for. Accurate take on social media/social ills, IMO.

Maybe it's just the sector I work in

But I find linkedin to be as pretentious as f**k. Do people really, in their hearts, believe all the marketing / personal growth / management skills / corporate bullshit they post there? Getting connection requests from people I've never worked with and will probably never work with. Predatory headhunters. I see it as an evil necessity: if you are looking for a job, you need to be on linkedin. I am counting the days when I can get off it.
Not that I think Facebook et al is any good. All social media is social engineering run amok.

@maybe...
LinkedIn is pretentious. Lots of bullsh*t and ostentatious virtue-signaling and shiny self-promotion. Strivers and manipulators and cynical exploiters, oh my.
Vancouver is like that, too. Ditto Manhattan. Monaco. Switzerland. The Emirates. Big chunks of Singapore, California, Miami, Paris, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul...even Luanda has some of the highest property values in the world.
That's also where the money is.
And money makes the developed world go 'round. If there's one thing the pandemic has unequivocally established, it's that.
'Cause it sure as sh*t ain't love, now, is it? Not when we're talking 6 figures of collateral damage. Maybe 7 figures before we're done. Disproportionately among the poor, the old, the infirm and the afflicted, and the marginalized. Not counting those who will soon be homeless, unsafe, trapped in squalor, and maybe starving and freezing, too.
So if you want stuff that matters, go where the money is. Willie Sutton had it right.
Facebook. Ha.

A waste of time IMO. At least I’ve rarely found that using it generated new contacts or business. Agree it’s mostly pretentious virtue signaling and self promotion, like all social media illness

@linkedinis
Useful for getting recommendations from former bosses, that recruiters can verify directly with them.
Especially if your former bosses are currently C-level execs or company owners. As a middle-aged dude looking for work, I have no leverage over these people. If they say something nice, it's because they want to.
And useful for producing resumes optimized for the resume-crunching software used by 97 percent of everybody. Because North American HR has lost all purpose, and exists only to cover the collective corporate ass. "Do you really expect me to go through two hundred resumes? Ohh, bother..."
Yes, I f*cking do. Because that's what allows you to spend the rest of your "office time" on TikTok, you useless f*cking tool... Also because I went through dozens when I was a hiring manager, and HR delivered a tall stack of paper to my office. And I read every one.
The last actual hiring manager to browse my profile was originally from Brazil. I looked her up. Otherwise, it's all headhunters and tourists.
Didn't surprise me one bit.
It has its uses. They're narrow but unambiguous.
In the rest of the social media universe, the user is the product being sold. Monetized primarily by that user, for that user's social media marketing benefit, IF the user is smart. Only true for some.
Otherwise, the masses are just meat for the machine. Basically no different than many governments.
