What’s it to you what they tell people about why they aren’t working right now? My ex got fired from a job, and was so devastated and embarrassed that he couldn’t even talk about that industry or be around anyone who was still in it. He tells people that he retired, but I know the truth. It’s none of my business how he chooses to handle such a painful situation. Just like it’s petty as hell if you want to tell people about why your partner isn’t presently working.

That’s the term a friend of mine uses. He was laid off 2 years ago after a decade of working at his company. Prospects for finding a new job during pandemic are low. So it’s just easier for him to call it semi retirement, but we know he was pushed out of his workplace. Sometimes we play tricks on ourselves to make us feel better.
