You know why I like other cultures?

Because you don't have to be thin, skinny, PC, pretentious and do 20 different sports to fit in while mimicking whatever is happening on Twitter. You can be fat, ugly, work 8 hour days and be gayfully married while owning property. Other cultures are actual real and authentic. They watch out for one another and do not sell their real estate to bidders all over the globe to turn it into a stock market out of the reach out ordinary hard working people in that culture. Whatever we have here, it is just marketing shit and I hate a lot of the people that live here who shallowly emanate it. Crooked. Corrupt. Not in the slightest bit worth looking up to by "developing" nations. Some less fortunate nations simply need health care to get them to live long and fulfilling lives. Their lifestyles, however, are mainly perfect.

Yeah, freedom to be who I want to be is one of the big reasons I live overseas...
But part of that comes from being outside the culture and not being forced into it's nuances.
Just because a culture isn't suffocating to me as an outsider doesn't mean it isn't suffocating for many of the locals.
I know I felt like I was being forced into a rigid mold I didn't want in Vancouver.
But while I lived happily in Korea for many years, the Koreans generally felt trapped in their own culture.
What was freeing to me because I could never 'fit in' was a trap to them because they had to fit in.
So, I don't know...it's complicated.
But also, yeah, Vancouver is a real estate disaster.

What cultures for example? Latin America languishes in political correctness for better or for worse. I still wouldn't want to be a member of the LGBTQ community there or a woman. It's made progress but not enough but yes, you don't have to be PC. In Japan, you can be drunk seven days a week if you want but it's a really oppressive culture in general. I like parts of Europe a lot more than I like it here, but man it's plagued with problems. The migration crises, persistent economic issues etc... and with climate change around the corner, it's only going to get worse for that continent, I'm sorry to say.

Do you see where I'm going with this? There's always trade-offs for each nation you're in. Yes, Vancouver is one of the most stupid and shallow places I've been too outside of Tokyo and LA. It's a totally pathetic excuse for a city really but it's always going to be something wherever you are. No place is perfect. Ideally I would love to do 3 to 6 months stints in all my favourite places until I die, but that's not how life works. We don't always get what we want. I feel lucky to have seen the things I have seen.

Only problem with that is that they actually want to be just like us

Please please stop worrying! This worldwide Pandemic is ushering in an economic Restructuring which will at a single stroke eliminate the US debt to China, while collapsing Vancouver and Toronto Real Estate by 85%.

From now on we will be hearing about poor landlords, ripped off by unscrupulous tenants etc.

Try to focus on your health. That will help you.

Confused by this

I dont know what culture is not plagued with these problems. Honestly, if being skinny is the biggest problem here, its minimal in compared to cultures where your future ability to be married depends on your looks and can bring shame to your family. Corruption? Yes, we have it but when was the last time you had to bribe a police officer at a check point? I lived in Europe and the poverty there is sickening. Asia as a woman? No thank you. I really cant think of a culture that is above and beyond what we have. Please let me know where and I will pack my bags.

You're wrong in almost every way, and I don't have time to explain nor give examples of all of them.
However, it is clear that you've never travelled nor spent time in those other places you claim are so wonderful.

Whatever

Naive, sentimental glorification of literally every other culture but the one you live in is a gnat’s bunghole away from racism. What makes you think you have what it takes to succeed everywhere but here?

Its beyond either/or

We are one human race on this boat Planet Earth. We either evolve to learn to cooperate and quit rocking the boat or, the boat will hit tipping point and we all go down. Many fall into the false dialectic of 'us vs. them' good guys / bad guys mentality. Its not so simple. There are most definitely selfish psycho bully boys attracted to halls of power but there are also good hearted cool heads who choose to quietly and humbly go about working in the institutions of society. On the other side of the false dialectic - same thing. On the protest lines there are good hearted ones and there are plenty of anger driven sociopaths. We all need to quit pointing the finger and look within. "You be the change you want to see in this world." When enough of us evolve to that consciousness, we as the human race will hit critical mass to evolve out of the dog race ..... Make a good life for yourself and make a good life for all.

Social contract

Aug 13, 2020 at 1:36pm

The world looks up to us because we seem to be a free and safe society... but we weren't born overnight... the welfare state was set up by our predecessors, for Canadians, not the whole world. We are free, but common sense and common law is part of our culture, this is why we can manage our freedoms. It's not only other cultures who don't have a tradition of common sense, but those born here have forgotten about it... individuals must realize that life would be unimaginably difficult outside of society... and while we reap the benefits of being born into a society, we forget that we are bound by this social contract.

Vancouver has problems or you?

Here's the raw truth, you will never have a good life if you have that mindset. Doesn't matter where you move, you will find something to complain about. Bitterness and recreational outrage has become a favourite pastime, happiness doesn't sell.
Move to one of these amazing countries and send us a postcard and let us know how it goes.
I love Vancouver, it's been go to me but I've also worked my sack off.
Good luck!
