Confessing

... that going thru this winter makes me anxious. I’m not, and have not ever been, a stay at home type of person. But I’m very risk adverse and all those things I used to do (gym, movies, clubs, bars, restaurants) are off limits. So what am I going to do with myself? I can only go jogging for so long. What am I going to do when it’s dark at 4pm, raining and there’s nothing going on and I avoid all my friends again for the next 6 months? I guess get a headlamp and just walk around the city? How is everyone else planning on getting through winter?

The same way as the rest of the year

Reading, movies, reading, gaming, reading, writing, reading, music, reading, arts & crafts, oh and reading.

Become an outside person

Embrace your feral side. With good outdoor gear, being outside in horrible weather is actually ok.

Wandering aimlessly

I'm pretty much the same. I wanted around and buy tea to drink while wandering more. My friends are all busy with kids and my husband died, so yeah, pull out the old headlamp I guess. I feel like a frog, hibernating in mud until spring.

Meditation.

I plan to master it. Sit and breathe and observe your thoughts without attaching to them. It’s a worthy pursuit. Also, sleep more and watch tv/movies with your Mom or other family member that maybe you don’t connect with enough. I don’t know. Is it really that horrible to have nothing to do? In Italy they call it “La Dolce Far Niente” - the sweetness of doing nothing.

Good question

I plan on doing the rest of the things on my list that I've been putting off for years. Covid's been good for that so far.

And at some point I want to cautiously visit my gym again and see if that's doable. I think I'll go crazy if I can't go to the gym this winter.

You're not alone with those feelings

I'm considering making my own hazmat-type suit and then standing on the corner of Georgia and Granville with my arms out, and a sign that says Desperate For Hugs. I'd love the physical squeezes and maybe people will empathize and appreciate the humour too.
Yes, I'm that desperate for human contact these days.

Zoom

Sep 24, 2020 at 7:09am

I get antsy too, but since covid I've been doing tons of stuff on zoom - improv, dance and yoga classes, lectures and courses, and catching up with friends far away. That satisfies my social needs, and then I put on the wet weather gear and go for a walk.

Yeah....

I've been watching Time Team - it's an archeological treasure hunt with really nice people who are experts and passionate about what they doing, plus it's really interesting to see what they find. First ten seasons are on Amazon Prime; all 20 seasons are on YouTube and uploaded by Time Team (so it's legit). Hosted by Tony Robinson, who played Baldrick on "Black Adder". I like it because it's always uplifting - they usually find something they're really excited about, and they're all so darned nice!

Lots of walks while listening to podcasts and audiobooks that help me keep a positive mindset. Hiking and trail running. There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! Big doses of vit D will help, too.
