Home reno shows on TV

We are just renting an apt but lately I've been watching these shows for something to fill the time at home. I don't get why everyone wants the "open concept " where you can see the whole kitchen from the front door. I've always liked the idea of being able to just close the door if you have a mess.

Put back the walls!

I couldn't agree more. Who wants to see the messy kitchen at a dinner party? Also, a lot harder to heat a large space, rather than smaller ones. Cosy seems to have gone out of fashion. And if you have one large space, you can only have one decor.

Worst is when the main entrance enters right into the living space. Would drive me bonkers. Why don't new builds have foyers or closets for coats?

I agree 100% - it's a trend and I think in five or ten years, people will be putting those walls back....

It’s mainly due

to the size of today’s condos in Vancouver, especially downtown. Most sheepeople don’t want to admit they paid way too much for their tiny place and making it open concept gives the feeling that it’s larger than what it is. Ironically a lot of open concept style condos are actually just bachelor suites.

because apts/condos are such tiny spaces these days, that they need "open concept" (missing walls) to make it seem more spacious.

Children

It's so you can watch your kids while doing domestic things. People with kids don't entertain much as their life is all about raising kids. And it gives them something to do when the kids...and the spark in the relationship... leaves the building. They can rekindle the relationship (or push it to its eventual demise) by redecorating. You know, putting in walls, etc.

No. These shows are from the states and the houses are beautiful, 4000 Sq ft. Still the kitchen and lvrm all one space. And they sell for 450,000!

For sure

Having lived in many different types of spaces including very old homes as well as modern open concept, I completely agree. Open concept is great if you’re living alone or possibly with one other person. Otherwise the noise is a pain! One person wants to watch tv but the other person is cleaning or cooking in the kitchen. The fan is going, the water’s running, appliances are running, etc. So the person trying to watch tv has to crank it up in order to hear it. If you’ve got kids it’s even worse, unless they’ve got another, separate space to go to. Sure, it looks cool and all, but it’s not very practical.
