Moving hell

My confession is I turn into a crazy person when I'm moving. I wish I was rich. I'd pay someone to do everything.

Dan offers some advice on where she might find it.

Me too. I do it every 10 years and I become a crazy person.

I’ve moved once and it was hell. It even snowed on my moving day. Even to this day, the distinct sound of packing tape sealing cardboard boxes reminds me of that horrible, stressful moving session. I was poor and had no furniture for the first 6 months, and my first rent cheque bounced. BUT, the move led to new adventures and personal growth, so it all worked out.
Last time I moved

was from the basement to the second floor which is also the top floor of my low-rise so I lugged it all myself. Being a hyper-hypo I just had a Snickers bar and a Coke but still was I ever tired afterwards
start saving

Start saving money now for the next move. Seriously. Proper supplies and hiring movers is not as expensive as hiring an entire service to do it for you, but can still be pricey (depending on how far the move is). I’ve moved across the country twice and three times within Vancouver and it takes a lot of pre-planning, zero reliance on “friends”, and uniform, sturdy boxes, not whatever crap you get at the booze or food stores. You can rent plastic boxes that will be cheaper than buying cardboard ones (depending on how much you are moving). There are tons of instructions online about how to pack properly. Or if that’s too much, hire a service. Look into how much it costs now, then start saving money specifically for the next time. You don’t have to be rich to hire people to do it (seriously!) Look into how much it would be right now and set aside $5-$10 a week, my last move of a 2 bdrm apt into a studio cost less than $600 a year ago, with movers doing all the hard work), you just have to have that one time money and it could save you so much stress. $5/week for five years should cover most small moves with leftover money. $10/week over five years would probably pay for professional packers/movers within the same city.
5 times in one year

That was hell. And I had to pay someone to pack for me because I'd just had back surgery. Believe me, getting someone else to do it is no less stressful - they do it wrong and stuff gets broken or lost. You have to watch them like a hawk.
Be Careful

I’ve had to move multiple times in the past 20 years, and it’s extremely stressful. I used movers a few times, and it was a crap shoot! Once I hired a Craigslist company and they didn’t show up. So I had to find someone else at the last minute. I wound up with a couple of crack heads. Another time I paid to rent boxes for $50, and they refused to refund that when I returned them in perfect condition. That same company sent street people as the so-called “professional” movers. Another company threw out my bed frame because they didn’t feel like carrying it. So if you do decide to hire movers, demand references and check them out. Also, check with the BBB. Also, the costs for an actual reputable moving company is very high. I paid over $3,000 to move a 1 bedroom suite within the lower mainland. Same people who threw out the bed frame.

Before moving home have an house clearance this will clear unwanted items and make it easier to make the big move.
