My landlord takes 12 of my paychecks per year. I get the other 12. This is not fair at all

Why don't poor people just buy more money?

You will build equity and not fork over your paycheques again

I’m sure every renter reading this comment is right at this very moment thinking “Now why didn’t I think of that?!” Then they’re all going to rush right out and buy themselves a place. Problem solved! In case you haven’t noticed however, we live in one of the most unaffordable places to live in the entire world. Your comment indicates that you’re sadly out of touch with the reality that so many residents live with.

Why is it not fair?

.. and who do you think should fix this problem? The government? People on disability assistance are denied access to market housing due to low funding, they're put into segregated BC Housing, if they're lucky. If not, they spend well more than half of their $$$ to pay for their housing. So, if Government is going to intervene in the housing market, you are probably a ways down the list. If you are healthy, maybe you switch jobs, maybe you take some course, maybe you start a business, you have all sorts of options that aren't open to people who actually require government assistance.

an online rental application I realized this was waaay too much personal information to be volunteered. Fuck that. Why should they know so much about me? Am I expecting half as much transparency from them?

You're lucky you have a good job. Some couples use half or more of their combined entire income.

It’s an age old

phenomenon - even in ancient times people had to pay for housing. That’s just how we have always done things.....I don’t really see an alternative. When communist governments supply housing, most people end up living in tiny closets made of prefab boards. (I can vouch for this as my relatives escaped the USSR). So, if you don’t like your situation, as soon as Covid is over try to change something. Maybe go work abroad and gain some perspective.

Singapore's public housing system is a great success. It is a compulsory savings scheme, which includes contributions from employers, to set aside funds for healthcare and housing costs in later life. Property buyers in Singapore can fund the purchase of a development board flat with a bank loan, a loan from the HDB, with cash, or with funds drawn from the CPF. It's considered the envy of the world. Singapore isn't communist, and certainly isn't classless, but soft authoritarian using a mixed economy. Pretty unique but I'd choose democracy with all its warts over Singapore. I value my freedom but creating more affordable housing, especially in Vancouver has to be sorted out. Families or anyone interesting is going to leave the city and the only people living here will be bland yuppies or affluent boomers. How awful.

Agreed.

You need a room mate, or another landlord.
