I bumped into someone I thought was a friend today who made an excuse not to stop and chat. When she walked away she said “see you around.” I know what that means. It’s too bad people don’t talk things out anymore. Vanishing without a trace is somehow easier than having a conversation. I don’t get it.

Don’t sweat it

I wouldn’t take it personally. Maybe this person was having a bad day, in a rush, or just not in the mood to talk. Some people feel caught off guard when they see people out of context.

And if it turns out that this person is no longer interested in a friendship, no worries and no need to have an awkward conversation about it. It’s a crazy time and we’re all evolving in different directions.

Easier said than done, but it’s usually best to let people go when you can sense that it is time to part ways.

In Vancouver “see you around” is code for “I’ll never see you again, have a good life.” The same holds true for “we should get together sometime.” It’s sad people are living their lives like this.

With Covid, we are living in strange times. Maybe the friend wasn't feeling comfortable standing close and chatting - we never know what someone else's fear level is re: Covid.

They were probably in a hurry. Maybe they wanted to catch the next bus before their ticket expired? If you really want to chat with them, just text/message them and they can respond at their leisure.

Yup. Just practicing social distancing measures. Everything happens for a reason... even when it doesn’t go as you like.

I was always bumping into this chick

I wished to avoid but she insisted on showing off her new boyfriend or her dominating attitude. Or else she'd refuse to acknowledge me if she didn't feel like it. Damn alpha fems!

I wouldn't want to stop and chat with someone if that person has shown some toxic or annoying traits like always talking about themselves or always talking negatively.

Would you rather have people tell you why they have written you off?

We can still love and support people from afar...

It's definitely hard in COVID, we only have so much energy to figure out where and who to spend time with safely and we want to spend time stress free. If the friendship is important I would reach out and ask if there is anything they need or if they would like to go for a walk and grab a coffee. It's normal for friendships to change especially now. And sometimes depending on the person, it may be healthier not to talk it out and leave it, people can get defensive, deflect, make it about them and that's draining too. Be well and hope you have others you can be social with. To be fair a lot of us are going need to brush up on our social skills when this all over!

Or maybe they were in a hurry or in a bad mood or didn't want to stop for a face-to-face conversation during a pandemic
