lots of increasingly bitter men. It feels like they are just now realizing their increasing age and mediocrity and are not dealing well with the fact that their influence and relevance, is waning. Some people deal with it better than others.

If Dan Savage was here, he'd encourage your partner to have an open relationship. That seems like the solution through time, so unless you want that, you should probably make a but of an effort.
