No More Dishes!

Because of covid I lost my job. It’s difficult to find work in my field so I have been collecting CERB and EI. The amount I am paid barely covers my bills so I have to eat every single meal at home in order to get by without running out of money. I am single and live alone. I am so tired of cooking for myself. I also can’t afford to buy anything pre packaged or any specialty items so my diet has been consisting of vegetables, canned beans and rice or pasta. I am a good cook so I can make my meals taste good but I can’t stand this anymore. I’m bored of cooking and just wish I had someone to share a meal with. Even if I still did the cooking but had someone to eat and clean up with it would be more enjoyable. I’m getting down in the dumps and avoid eating so I don’t have to cook and deal with the mountain of dishes multiple times a day. If you live in a family or with housemates that share the load during this pandemic you are lucky. Living alone has its moments but being alone all the time is not healthy.

I get it

While my circumstances are very different, I totally get where you’re coming from. Eating is better sometimes with others. It enhances the food experience. I had this weird thought the other day of buying a large pizza, and eating it publicly and offering anyone walking by to help themselves. I really really miss eating with others. I miss the eye contact and jokes and discussions and personal openness. It’s completely debatable whether any one would actually take a slice (they would worry about Covid, they would worry about it being poisoned) but I just want to share food, have a joke, and everyone gets on with their day. I remember I brought a box of Tim Hortons donuts once to a concert, and told people to help themselves, and it made them smile because it was so random and it made me happy. (I’m absolutely not looking for anyone’s number or anything like that.) That all being said, I’m going to bake cookies now.

Wow. That was quite the rant. I’m not sure whether to slap you or hug you. While I agree that living alone can definitely have its challenges, the whining about having to feed yourself instead of paying someone else to do it for you is just pathetic. You poor thing. *eye roll*.

Time to expand your repertoire. Youtube is meant for times like this :) Asian cultures are full of cheap delicious eats. Buy some ginger and enjoy congee for awhile, then with the money saved by a few specialty items, like seaweed or rice cakes and make gimbap or Korean rice cake soups. Anyway, just some ideas but it's fun to experiment. I made hor fun today for the first time. that's a dish that's fun to say :D

Vaccines are on their way. You can always Zoom, FaceTime , Messenger... so many ways to be face to face virtually. But suck it up, it's not forever. People have been through worse with less conveniences and tech at their disposal. We'll pull through. You gotta focus on the reality and keep your mind busy. Get out of the house. Read. Go to the library. There are people along the way and always someone to chat with if you're willing.

People who don't live alone have no idea how hard this has been on those of us who do. Ignore the comments.
For me cooking at home has been my money-saving superpower.

Ummm

Make a bunch of chili and lasagna. Trade it for food made by your friends, family and neighbors. I did this and found out a coworker makes chili about 10 times better than mine. But even though it was still chili, it was different chili and kind of fun.

I get it. At first I was cooking a lot too, trying out new recipes, etc. But now I'm just not hungry anymore, even though I could afford the occasional uber eats, I wouldn't enjoy it. I'm spending most of my time in bed anyway, so less energy/food is needed. I'm starting to have dizzy spells when I go outside for a walk, so I've cut back on that too.
Some people just don't get it, they say things like "the pandemic is hard for everyone", but I was bipolar long before the pandemic hit, and these same people would just tell me it's my choice to be miserable, that I need to be more social and adopt a more positive world view.

In conclusion, I can't offer you any good advice, but I can refrain from giving you thoughtless crappy advice. And to let you know, you're not alone.

Being constantly alone can be fine for some

If i lived alone i would be spending this time writing and creating in other forms.
Also would read a TON of books and learn as much stuff as possible... both thru books and online.
Lastly would exercise pretty much daily & only have healthy stuf around so i could get back down to 130 (140 at least). I would try all kind of different recipes because ~ there are 365 (usu.) days in a year!

But i have people, family i love, to care for. Family first.
So I read a bit occasionally and am learning español & another language.

pros and cons to everything

I thought I’d do all that stuff too. Now I’m just depressed and spend most days in bed.
