Dogs Dogs Dogs

Recently, a friend got a dog. And, the dog is cute and I love dogs. Lately, I find our conversations to be focused solely on their dog. From what their dog did, to what it eats, to how it plays with other dogs, to a disease or an infection a dog can get. We would talk about something else, but then we somehow wound up talking about their dog again. I know they're really excited about their dog and wants to talk about it. However, I can't help, but feel dissociated with our conversation and feel our conversations are running dry even though I'm trying to talk about other things than their dog! And, for some reason, they keep trying to get me to get a dog and say how much I'll love it, that I won't regret it, etc. even though I've told them many times I'm not in the place to buy a dog due to time and money. Just wanted to rant a little. Thanks for listening. End rant.

Sorry just kidding hahah!
Perhaps your friend is talking about the dog so much because with Covid there’s not much to do and so this is all they have experienced right now that is new and so all they have to share with you,.?

Otherwise what else is there..? I got up, pooped and ate and went to zoom work and ate and went to bed...?

The dog obsessed

I know people like that too. I may even have been one in the past. When someone gets a new dog, it’s pretty typical for that to be the main focus of their attention for a while, due to the impact the dog has on their lifestyle. I’m patient for a while. But the people who literally make the dog the centre of their life can be pretty hard to take. Especially when they continue to make their dog’s needs more important than those of everyone else in their life. Whatever you do, don’t ever go on a trip with someone like that. (Trust me on this one.)

This is like...

People with kids, when I got into my 30's and knew I didn't want kids I decided to separate myself from people who had them or wanted them. Because there is nothing else that want or do or talk about (and I get it) but I don't care. Dogs are like kids sometimes

More people to avoid

It used to be that child breeders were the only ones that became single-subject, conversationally-inept automatons. Now that dogs have become practice children (or outright children replacements), we have to add pet owners to the same group.

Kids kids kids

Replace “dog” with “kid” and you still get the same story. Guess your friend settled for a dog, shame they didn’t get a kid. Understandable as most shouldn’t be parents anyways. I wonder when Cats will be popular again?

good dog

"...single-subject, conversationally-inept automatons"

So, so true. Really. Unless you also own one (dog, kid, whatever), every interaction leads to one limiting topic. When I learn a friend has a kid, I announce "see you in twenty years" and write them off because you know all they'll be able to talk about is "my kid" this and "my kid" that as they withdraw from every other aspect of societal interaction. Pet owners are no different, it seems. It's as if people look for an all-encompassing diversion to avoid intellectual stimulation as they lose themselves in a lifestyle choice.
It's the mental equivalent of sweatpants.
