Ignore me?

I confess that when someone who I’m supposedly important to ignores my text, (as in, no reply for hours or until the next day or later) I assume that I’m not important enough to them to be bothered to reply. So, I react accordingly. I’m busy too. I know that it’s not always easy to have a conversation when you’re not up for it. But it takes seconds to send a quick message to say that you’ve got it, and you’ll respond in more detail later. If you can’t be bothered to do that, then unless you’ve got an extremely legitimate excuse (someone died, you’ve become terribly ill, you’ve been robbed, your phone has been stolen, etc.), you’ve just told me everything I need to know.

Good for that person. They have seen your true colours emerge. So glad to hear the oppressed ignoring their oppressor. You flip it on them? Same response in retaliation? Good luck with that!

I see your point but know not everyone feels that way about the urgency of responding to texts, so try to remember that too.

The problem is, everyone is so demanding for attention these days. And when they don't get it - right away - they pout and whine like two year olds. You are not the centre of the universe. Grow up and get over it.

I don't take my phone with me everytime I leave my bedroom. If you called the landline I will answer if I'm home, but I'm sorry I'm not carrying my phone around with me all the time.

Goes both ways. You finally crossed them. Maybe they thought the exact thing you’re incessantly complaining about. Poor you. Glad they woke up!

Maybe he handed over his device to the authorities ... because you had his phone installed with malware? Probably not...

Addiction and isolation

A friend of mine gave me cliche words of wisdom "check yo self before you wreck yo self." Sure everything you say about the other person is plausible, but the only person's actions you can control are yourself. If you are getting worked up waiting for message, that's on you. You can work on you, while being frustrated with them. When you get worked up, take a breathe and go for a short no phone walk. breathe. smell the fresh air.

I have mixed feelings about this confession.

In some ways, sure, a long wait time in receiving a reply to a text can send a silent message that either the person isn’t honouring our time the same way we are honouring theirs, or that they are feeling overwhelmed with us and are setting boundaries on their space and time. Individual cases may vary.

The part of this confession I bristle at is the idea that I must send a quick text back immediately unless I have an “extremely legitimate excuse.” That phrasing suggests that someone else has claimed ownership over me and my responses. Because I value my independence, I feel stifled and want to run away.

Lay off

Conversely, it's really annoying to be called on this. My friends are very important to me, but two of them track every minute that goes by afterwards. Can we please go back to some time allowance? Maybe I'm at work, or in bed, or outside and missed the call. I'm not going to check messages all day and night every ten minutes. I don't keep my phone in my bag beeping all the time for every alert. It seems like the technology is driving this incessant, constant contact.
