Ironic

Originally, sure, I hoped to hook them for the ego boost for those times I was feeling a little alone. Unfortunately I fell hard, and when they knew they strung me along as long as they could. Taste of my own medicine and all that I guess. But that aftertaste really lingers.

Why the downvotes? Op has clearly shown self awareness in their post. Sure they did something shitty but that's not what the confession is about.
We could have something like "what I ate for dinner", "dog poop sucks" or "it's so hard to date in Vancouver". Snore

Or... or... OR...

"They" were in love with the OP from the start, stuck it out when they learned the OP felt the same way, waited way too long for the OP to act on it, realized the OP was stringing them along, got frustrated, felt used and gave up after realizing nothing was changing despite continuous efforts that were unreturned.
Cold feet spoke for them so much it killed the dream.
People need to stop waiting for the other. If you like (or "love") another, act on it. Work out the complications after instead of living the wounds of regret.
I wonder what "they" feel now, and whether the OP bothered to find out.

Doesn't matter and neither do they

So you weren't actually "in love" with them at first sight? Usually most relationships start with lust at first sight especially when you're young. I wouldn't feel too bad about it. They certainly didn't "love" you at first sight either, and they never did as an after sight. Not saying your ego wasn't involved since you're human, but your heart certainly followed at some point. They strung you along and did what they did because their heart was never their for you. For their intent it was always about their ego, to inevitably stab you in the back, and just for their sadistic kicks and giggles. If they had the chance they'd just do it again even though they really had no right to do it in the first place. They were never that into you and certainly not in the way that they strung you into being over them. You didn't really know them, and they were to caught up in their own intent which just blinded them into really knowing you. They should have just moved on with themselves and allowed you to do the same without their head games. I can assure you, the aftertaste that you have, isn't going to compare to the hell of a horrific aftertaste that awaits them, and anyone else they included with themselves.

I'm sure "they" are acting on what they "feel" instead of living the wounds of regret. They do nothing, they say nothing, because they regret nothing they did or didn't do, so nothing is what they feel for the OP. The OP is better off with someone that does something, says something, feels something, and doesn't regret trying in the real world like the OP did for "they".

The Aftertaster

Jan 26, 2021 at 9:34pm

All the word salad on this thread is giving me heartburn.

Word to the wise: don’t waste ANY time writing speculative fiction about what other people may be feeling.

If someone is fucking with your emotions, they can fuck off, full stop. The truth is, there are a lot of weak people out there who want to break others in order to make themselves feel and appear stronger.

I am so sick of the stories we tell ourselves and the excuses we make about people who — let’s face it — despise us.
