A true friend

I came off as petty or jealous when an ex took a chance on a business venture a few years ago. Maybe I was. But my vocalness came from a place of truth. The area was slated for redevelopment and that was likely why it came available. The new adventure with the new relationship was short lived. COVID was the first blow, and now redevelopment is in full swing. A friend tells you the truth, even if it hurts, a person trying to get laid tells you what you wanna hear even if leads to financial and personal disaster.

As the saying goes and there is good reason - never ever mix business with pleasure. I speak from my own personal experience lesson learned.

and so often when someone is with the wrong person, you’ll just look jealous if you say anything. Or if you criticize a popular coworker for a legitimate reason. Or a new person your friends are hanging with. That’s why in situations like these it’s better to keep your mouth shut and just let people figure it out, even if it sucks

You just can't help some people. If you tell them something they don't want to hear, they'll turn it round on you and bad-mouth you to everyone else. Even when it turns out you were right, they won't thank you for trying to help, they'll just resent you. Best just to let them make their own mistakes.

Because I care, I warned my ex not to marry an American during the pandemic that she's only met twice and the ex stopped communicating with me.
People only hear what they want to hear.

I agree but

Not everything looks good on the surface and right off the bat, but making a real deal that lasts is about taking short term losses for sustainable long term gains.

Op Here, your comment highlights what my exact gripe was. At best there was a window of maybe a year piggy backing on the previous business with which to prosper. The long term prospect appeared to be non existent. Hopes and dreams don't mix well with business, and it appeared that hopes and dreams were fuelling their decisions. I can not speak for them, but I certainly would not have wanted to run a small business during a Covid year only to have massive redevelopment happening right now. Even worse is to not be able to sell or get out from underneath it as the market is flooded with small business owner struggling.
