Good Cop Bad Cop Parenting Fail

When I was young, my parents decided that the one who was a psychologist would discipline me (and they would abuse the good cop if they defended me). Safe to say, I have a better relationship with the Good Cop.

I dont believe in violence but at this point in my life you try to hurt me or any of my children, well your going down like a ton of bricks. Hard !!
There should never have to be a bad cop in any relationship.
"Communication" that why we have voice boxes.
But I tell ya there is a New Sheriff in town.
Just dont get in my sights.
You"ll be fine.
Im sorry someone hurt you and your family.

The OP said one of their parents was the bad cop. Not some random person.

Psychologist NOK

In my experience psychologists have more baggage and trauma than most. They also rarely adopt or internalize the theory and methods they practice. I know so much that practice won’t really do much for me. Once they grow up or can’t manage the dumpster fire that is their personal life; they start practicing what they preach and become much better healers.

I agree with 'Pay Attention'. It's not at all about whatever attention deflecting or external validation you're here to accomplish. You're probably more the bullying authoritative "bad parent" than you realize in your scenario. "Don't get in my sights". Yeesh. Let that be figurative. It doesn't sound like anyone who should be in literal possession.

No. You're really disconnected from what you wrote to take it there and obviously trying really hard again at deflecting. Good luck with that.

Or maybe...

the “bad cop” didn’t choose that role as much as it was handed to them? My ex is one of those people who flies under the radar all the time. He was NEVER the bad guy. We had kids, and unless I was ok with them basically running the show, it was always my job to discipline them. He just sat back and did nothing. That was his MO for absolutely everything in our life. He prefers to let other people do the dirty work, so that he comes off as smelling like a rose and the other person gets all the crap thrown at them. After a divorce and a few years with the benefit of seeing it all from a distance, I finally got to see it for what it was. The guy is a covert narcissist. It became crystal clear once I was away from the situation, that this was his way of controlling everything, whilst making himself look like an angel. So perhaps Op, you should be taking a very long hard look at the situation of your earlier life before you blame your other parent. Things aren’t always what they appear to be on the surface.
