I think

my 90 year-old grandma is an ass hole. She lives alone in the huge West Van property that my grandfather paid for, collecting his pension, while the rest of the family struggles to get by in Vancouver. She is completely dependent on my parents and makes them drive across the city twice a week to bring her groceries and do chores around the house. She has no friends and fights with people all the time. She tried to tell me that I should move in with her and became extremely angry when I politely refused. Everything is about her and she does nothing for anyone.

My grandma called my Japanese girlfriend a "Jap." There are a couple of generations in this country that were born at the right time in history to reap the benefits of being born in a resource rich nation in a post-war economy with very little education. If they did go to university those universities were poorly ranked third tier institutions back in the day, so they really didn't leave those institutions with a good education or a great deal of self awareness. They believe it's the birth right to live large. The raped and pillaged with country and mismanaged logging, fishing, mining, oil etc… It's a sh!tshow and future generations will have to pay the price.

Oh, and whatever you do don't ask grandma how she feels about the First Nations People. F#ck those people. They're just a pain in the ass.

I’m not making excuses for those generations as what you say is all true. But. They were a product of their times and therefore were not as “enlightened” as we are today. Surely, then, we can understand why they acted the way they did, given everything you say is true.

Your grandfather paid for the house because he had the opportunity to get an education and/or job. Many women did not, and if they did work outside the home, there were limited jobs with much lower pay. Your grandmother may not have paid for the house, but she probably still worked all day doing unpaid cooking cleaning childcare. If she was wealthy her whole life and was always mean, then you have a right to complain. But if not, then take some time to look at the whole story.

...she does still have a couple friends who are alive, one who is 94!! But she is always getting into squabbles with her friends over the most petty things. She used to have a decent job, but no education like you all said. When I was 23 she told me I was an ‘old maid’ with no husband or kids and that my life would be a disaster. She used to smack my mom and her brother
around. I could go on and on. No, I am not moving in with her, no way in hell!!!!

More to the story?

We have no way to know if your grandmother really is as bad as you claim. Maybe she is. But I take issue with your remark about her living in a house that your grandfather paid for. It’s a very ignorant way to think about women who very likely stayed at home to manage the household and raise children, as well as looking after the man. Women had very few career opportunities in past generations. Even if they did work outside of the home, they usually earned far less than a man would have. Your grandmother earned that house just as much as your grandfather did. She just didn’t get a paycheque for the work that she did. Like many, many women who make it possible for their husbands and children to enjoy the lifestyle they do.

Personally I am tired of hearing “They were a product of their times” as an excuse for abusive behaviour.
