Consoomer

I finally realized why I've been depressed and haven't felt great about myself lately. All I do is consume things that other people produce. I don't create anything, I just consume what others have created. I guess that would do it.

Consumption without balanced creation = depression for me too. Thanks for articulating that.

It sounds like you both created and consumed. Good job.

How much do you want to matter?

It's an easy thing to feel like you don't matter even though one single act of compassion, one single kind word, or even a simple smile to someone else can have a ripple effect around the world effecting life for many in some positive way. It's not like you have to be the next Mozart or anything.

If you're not creating kids, you are at least doing a good deed which affects the whole planet.
Just because you have the power to create something, doesn't mean that it's necessary to do so.

Even if your job seems pointless, it probably still needs to be done. You may not be saving lives with groundbreaking medical research or cleaning up the ocean's plastic, but you're also not a slumlord or developer or an inventor of useless mass-produced junk like the Potty putter or slap-chop, are you?

A post capitalist society will be a thing in the future, just not in my lifetime.

I live a minimalist life and have always known that materialism will never fill the hole inside.I see my family and friends consuming so much in hopes of finding happiness. With the pandemic the consumerism only seems to have gotten worse.I remember when restrictions were first relaxed and saddened to see people lining up for blocks to buy "stuff. Yes,people need clothes, shoes etc but this gross, relentless drive to keep buying things we don't really need will not fill that hole. And government's around the world are pushing us to "keep the economy going but this policy ignores the real issues. Some days,it's just so depressing to see what we've become.

There can be great joy (and comfort) in creating - guess it depends on what you might want to create.

I was a knitter pre-Covid, and have increased my output over the past year. Since last March, I’ve bought one pair of leggings and a pack of socks, but I’ve made a few sweaters I love and wear all the time. There’s also a great sense of community out there for anyone into the fiber arts. It gives me a sense of purpose and keeps my mind off other things.

So I guess it depends on what you might want to create. There are YouTube videos out there for so many things, and I will say it’s a great way to reduce boredom. There is a certain joy that comes in starting a new project (whatever it is) and a great satisfaction in having a finished product that you made yourself.

Anyway, that may not be what you meant and I may have taken you too literally. Either way, hope you find whatever will lift your spirits.
