Straight male, age 45

I can't do online dating anymore. I can't read one more profile, filled with hope, only to be disappointed by a TOTAL lack of information. No sense of who she is, nothing about personal interests, no idea what they like or dislike. Give me something!

You’re supposed to look at the heavily filtered selfies. But seriously, this city is pretty shallow, the lack of information and no sense of who they are is exactly what you will get. Like everything here, it's all a facade.

Good for them! They understand that these dating apps harvest and then sell your private info. These apps suck your soul. They know you have anxiety, eczema, mental illness, etc. And these tech giants are plotting to use it against you at a later date. Oh and they also own your photos. Especially if you’ve given them access to your camera roll. I’m not paranoid. This is their game. And they’re playing you. Sweet dreams are made of these who am I to disagree everybody’s looking for something. You’re just on the losing end.

Very few are conscious of that, and some who do continue on using such apps knowing it's essentially spyware because they're addicted, everyone else is doing it, and they're afraid they're missing out. I was in advertising, I know how easy it is to lead people around by their noses. Most people are sheople.

Perhaps they’re smart though

My experience using those sites was that the men that contacted me never even bothered to read my profile or care about who I was as a person. All they focused on was my physical appearance. Maybe you’re that rare guy that actually does read them and care about who the woman is and what her interests are, and if so, good for you. But trust me, you ARE the rare one.

I also feel disappointed when I see an attractive person on a dating site with nothing in their bio to go off of to start a conversation. But the problem isn't other people--it's my own anxiety about direct communication and my fear of rejection. It's inappropriate to place social expectations on someone I'm unable or unwilling to put in the effort to get to know.
Same principle of self-accountability applies if you read someone's profile and don't view whatever you just read as information because you were expecting more/different information.

Online dating hasn’t worked for me
That’s no way to get to know someone
People look decent in their photos
Talk to them on the phone and they are socially awkward
If I met them in real life I could determine that in five minutes and saved all that emailing and texting time.
I’ll stick to meeting people the old fashioned way

Just give up on it man. Take it from a fellow older guy, things like dating apps are for kids. Who knows how this shit is supposed to work. I wasn't born with a smartphone in my hand, so it all just makes me feel old. Far better to meet women the old fashioned way, in person in real life. It'll get easier once the pandemic is over.
