too much screen time

I sure would like to reduce my phone use, detox, dopamine fast, and everything... at the same time, computers are what got me to where I am in life. They're the one thing I'm really good at. All I have other than that is some amateur musical ability. Where to go from here?

Our whole lives are tied into technology now, especially since covid. Unless you go off the grid, and learn how to forage.

Not going to happen. The net is a window to the world, there's no going back to our provincial outlooks now. As we speak, I'm watching/listening a DJ in the Netherlands mix older techno vinyl, live! Besides, I'm too weak to become a hunter-gatherer.

If you played your musical ability in a park

I would be there and drink up every chord. Guitar, cello, keyboard. Dying to hear some live music.

Baby steps?

I’ve been tied to multiple screens for quite some time now so I understand where you’re coming from.

In the last few weeks I’ve been allocating a certain number of hours a day where my phone is turned all the way off (not just on silent) and made it a rule not to bring my phone to bed.

These small steps have been helpful not only for reducing screen stress but also for observing that I am jonesing for my phone when it’s not at my fingertips. Kinda scary how programmed we’ve become by a device that gives us the illusion of control by performing for us through swipes and clicks.

Highly recommend these baby steps for anyone wanting to dip a toe into dopamine detox before plunging all the way in.

Since computers are everything you have got in life, please go back to them.

Its where you belong.

What capacity did you use your computer skills for? It's not a bad skill to have. If you weren't using it to control voting, suppress voices, misinform, cyber stalk, and any other fascist flying monkey bully nonsense, then what's the problem? Everything in moderation.
