5.85

My first summer job in Ontario 20 years or so ago paid 5.85 an hour. Since then I've saved as much as I can...but 20 years later I think I would have had more fun just spending it. The money is devaluing faster than I can miserly penny-pinch it toward retirement goals.

I'm sorry to hear that being responsible and saving doesn't seem to be working out for you, but on the other hand I gotta say thank you. This makes me feel better about not having saved much of anything for retirement! Time to spend a little money and enjoy it while you can. Who knows what the future has in store.

Pinching pennies and pinching dimes, pinching away the best years of your life. Youth is wasted on the young.

like you are in your early 30's, this means there is still time for lots of fun before your soul starts to get too heavy from life, and your body starts to change and not bounce back from injuries as well.
You still have at least 10 years of heavy fun times left before either your soul or body get tired. If you are really lucky, neither of those things will happen.

I have almost nothing for retirement, but, I have lived a very full life. I would not trade it for millions of dollars for retirement. We only get ONE kick at the can.

My first job

was 50 yrs ago. Min wage was 90 cents/hr. I was a waitress and I remember getting folks a pack of cigarettes from the machine - we needed a quarter + a dime + a nickel. I remember it like it was yesterday. Wish I would have bought a house when I got better jobs.
