Can't take it with you

My grandparent just moved out of the home their spouse (long departed) built in the 50s . It's a sad occasion, a home with so many memories slated to be emptied and sold off. Pack up a suitcase and pictures and leave the rest behind to be the contents of an estate sale. Nothing of real value, just fixtures in an outdated dwelling. I wonder what is going through my grandparent's mind. If they are ready for the next phase of their days, living in an expensive 'hospital' sized room, far away from friends and family who cannot easily drop by for a cup of tea or coffee. It really makes you think about mortality and how this generation focuses so much on "stuff". You can't take it with you...

Your grandparent might as well be preparing for a life sentence in prison.

Assuming it's a grandmother, her life is about to consist of having all kinds of independence taken away from her, as she is now going to be expected to pass through "the system" as easily as possible for everyone concerned.

Here's a thought: make sure you tell your parents, or whoever is responsible for this that one day you will be happily signing the same kind of papers to condemn them to the same fate. Works like a charm, lol

Being old, alone, in the hospital

At my end of days, simply terrifies me.

As Denzel Washington said, you never see a UHaul behind a hearse. Correct, you can’t take any of it with you.

How which generation focuses so much on "stuff?" That's not a generational thing, that's an individual thing. Maybe you could, OH I DON'T KNOW ... talk to your grandparent? Ask your grandparent how they are doing. Be a human.

You can say "Grandma" or "Grandpa" and address him or her.

This confession comes across as cold.

You can still be in your grandparent's life. You can still pick up the phone or drop in for a cup of tea.
