I noticed that trend in Vancouver. Purchased sophistication. On the surface the person certainly looks the part, but hasn't picked up a book in a decade neither cares about art nor culture. An Audi, Italian furniture, always taking a trip, but somehow the conversation is always so vapid. It usually comes back to finances or things purchased on a trip.
This happens when provincial city has an infusion of money. The locals lose their minds and believe it'll never end. It reminds me of the Asian crises, that was something to witness first hand.
I'm not saying that's you, I don't know you, but it's certainly a trend these days in Vancouver.

Someone I know bought a Herman Miller chair and saved the cardboard box, believing/imagining that it too was also much more valuable than a non-branded cardboard box. She offered it to my son as a potential toy. “We have plenty of cardboard boxes,” I said. A chair is a chair is a chair. It’s really amazing how people perceive $4000 chairs and the cardboard boxes that hold them. Further to that, I visited my friends condo for a party, and his wife framed a Louis Vuitton paper bag as an art piece. Gotta love the brand whores in this town.

There's a healthy trade online for Apple product boxes, so you can put
your old laptop in it and put it away for the day you sell it for $5000 as a collectible. Comes with authentic Apple packaging... People and their stupid f#%king sh#t. Materialistic values may stem from early insecurities and are linked to lower life satisfaction, according to psychologists. Have these people any self-awareness? Such a waste.

Reminds me of a tool back in the late 1980's who was constantly yapping about "high tech" everything.

I wonder how "high tech" everything he was rabbiting on about back then looks today.

Brand names have never impressed me, usually substandard quality in most cases.
Cause your paying for the name.

I’ve always hated branding of any kind. There’s something so sheeplike about the type of attitude that says that wearing a specific brand means you’re “better”. There’s something so obscene to me about the tendency of so many people who live here now to want ostentatious displays of wealth. Money doesn’t make you any better than anyone else. It sure doesn’t give you class. I’ve witnessed some of the most classless behaviour from people driving $300,000 cars and carrying $2000 handbags. It’s all pretentious, and it’s more sad than anything else. These people need some soul.

It's all useless, because you can't USE it. If a dog comes to visit or toddlers, the owners go into high stress. My parents once asked people not to drink wine in the living room, in case it spilled on to the carpets or furniture. Eesh, what's the point.

One cannot buy taste. You either have taste or you don't. Buying expensive furniture has nothing to do with having taste, although in some cases, it might. Having such expensive furniture simply means you are a snob and are incredibly insecure, because you are someone who needs to have status, based on designer items and labels. #loser

It doesn't matter how much money you spend on "things" because it won't fill that void.Just because you foolishly spent thousands of dollars on a chair,it doesn't make you any happier than if you spent a hundred. Money buys alot of things but never true friends or love.I know people who chase this illusion and not one of them is content.The more they have,the more they complain.And if you're spending thousands of dollars on a chair,perhaps it's time to do some soul searching.I've never been impressed with people's "things",I'm impressed by kindness,helpfulness,caring,generosity of sharing.These things matter,not possessions.
