Early stages

My dad is in the early stages of prostate cancer. He’s going for an MRI this week. He’s been monitoring himself and he’s been doing a good job, but it doesn’t change how I feel. I’m still worried that I’m going to lose my father and it just hasn’t sat well with me. I don’t want anything to happen to him. He hasn’t even told any of his brothers and sisters. My dad has a very complicated relationship with his family because they were never really that close. They’ve always been distant from each other. He doesn’t want to alarm any of them but I guess they’ll have to find out sometime. I don’t say much but I’ve been crying a lot lately and can’t stop. I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose my father.

Hang in there

Sorry you are going through this. It was probably a shock to find out, but prostate is very treatable, so try to be positive. As for your dad’s complicated relationship with his family, that’s not important now. Spend some time with your dad and support him, maybe go to appointments with him, etc. This might make you feel more optimistic about his recovery. Best wishes to you both.

Maybe

It will be OK. Early stage prostrate can be treated. My Dad had it when he was about 50 and they beat it. He lived well into his eighties after that. I hope this happens for your father.

I really do. The fear & the sadness comes across so clearly in this confession. If you need to cry, by all means do so, but away from your Dad. Allow your body to let out the fear and sadness. Your Dad must be feeling all kinds of things right now, and without that family support most people take for granted. He is going to lean on you. Just take things one day at a time. Don't think too far ahead. Enjoy little moments with your Dad, like coping with his terrible Dad jokes over a cup of coffee. Practice really good self care (your favourite tea, meditation, exercise, talking to a trusted friend) so you can be there for your Dad.

So sorry to hear this , but know that prostate cancer can be very treatable
But diet is very crucial
Absolutely no sugar. Sugar feeds cancer
Eggs are the worst thing to eat for prostate cancer
It’s the choline in them
Spend as much time with your Dad as you can.

There’s some really sweet advice here and also some really weird advice (why is tea always a self-care thing? Go smoke a joint or get stupid drunk and howl at how unfair this life thing can be.) The thing is, your dad is doing to die. Hopefully not any time soon, but he will. So don’t waste any more time worrying about IF he will die, because he most definitely WILL die, and you won’t be able to stop it. But you might have many more years with him, and spending that time worrying will be awful when you can just ... enjoy him while he’s here. Enjoy him, support him, love him (tell him that!) vent to friends/a counsellor. Tell him what a great dad he is and how grateful you are to know him.

Hey there. I felt the need to respond to give u a bit of hope. My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer 6-7 years ago. At the age of 72. I was also a wreck and worried. He is cancer free today. If your dad is in the early stages this is very good. Prostrate cancer is a very slow growing cancer with high survival rates because of this. They told my father to monitor his with MRI etc. he did eventually opt for surgery and has done extra well. His 3 brothers also got diagnosed and surgery and all in remission for a few years. Its a genetic disease so important he tells his brothers to watch out if they have it. It’s hard watching our parents get older but please have faith in this. He will be ok. He caught it early and they are doing an MRI which is good because that means he has a good doctor more than likely. As that is what should be done but isn’t always according to my dad’s doctor. Sending hugs and prayers to your dad.

Tea is far more healthy for you than weed. Don't let potheads convince you otherwise

Western 'allopathic' medicine

has its place, but so does Naturopathic medicine. My family has consulted with both and we are now seniors maintaining good health.

Prostate cancer is very slow growing
I have a friend who had it ten years before even starting treatment
