I wonder what it’s like...

I have no family in this city and I live alone. I see friends celebrating birthdays posting photos of birthday cakes & flowers & gifts they’ve received from friends and family. I’ve spent the last decades worth of birthdays alone. No cake. No candles. No flowers. No party. No dinners. My “closest friend” didn’t even bother to call. Sent a text. I always do something special when I know someone is having a birthday because I know how horrible it feels to have no one acknowledge it. I guess that’s my confession. More than anything else I want someone to celebrate my next birthday with me with a cake and candles. Silly maybe but it would mean so much.

Sounds like my experience

10 years living in Vancouver without a pandemic was the loneliest time I've lived in a city. Hugs to unreciprocated texts and friends.

I can relate

I've never had a birthday party in my life. A consequence of growing up poor and unpopular I suppose. If there was some extra money that year, my mom bought a cake but that's about it. I'm an adult now, and I'm not close with my family and I don't have friends. I have an old acquaintance from high school I keep in touch with through email, but he doesn't know or care when my birthday is. I have a sister who lives overseas. I send her and her kids birthday cards and some money every year, but I don't get so much as a phone call from any of them when its my birthday. I don't make much money so for my last birthday I took myself to McDonald's as a "treat" because I had some coupons. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I can relate to how you feel OP. I hope you're able to celebrate with someone on your next birthday.

It is time to stop whining and get out there and create some actual real friendships.

Try having your birthday in January. It’s that every year no matter what.

My workplace

Would always have birthday cake organized with the team. I admit it was awkward at best, standing around with people and making the birthday person feel important. It got so bad that I just told my team lead to drop me from this annual ritual. My birthday is personal and I don’t want to share it with just anyone. I don’t have any answers OP. I sometimes hear from friends who expect something to be done for them on their birthday, yet they literally did zero for my birthday. Better to go do something and celebrate yourself. One year I went to an all-inclusive resort for one week in Mexico. That was the best birthday present ever and I had nothing but positive memories from it.

You must be a special kind of person to be so nasty to someone who is clearly feeling really down. Slow golf clap for you!
