Living in vancouver a nightmare

It's just a waking nightmare knowing that I cannot find a place to live that I can own one day. No retirement for me... realistically, living in a van when I am old and cannot work. Fuck these political hacks! They are scum.

....but home ownership has never been a right in any coveted market worldwide.

Is it that bad?

Is it really "a living nightmare" that you don't see home ownership in your future? Really? I'm closing in on 60 and I've never seen it in my future either. I live my life, a tenant in the same place since forever, love Vancouver, enjoy my surroundings, eat good food, try to be a good person, love my friends, all that... Stop worrying about achieving some stupid objective you were told was the most important thing ever and look around you and start living.

... you need democracy in fact the more it's become a so-called free and Democratic society the harder it's being to make a living like it was in about 1970 I think that homesteading was removed and based on my own investigation it was by about the mid-1980s that even buying Crown Land for residential purposes was not allowed they're technical reason for this was all well if there's no permanent road how can we insure access for I don't know to go give you tax bills I guess?

But more to the point if we live in a democracy which for better or for worse that seems to be what we have now well do you blame the politicians or do you blame the people who vote for them which includes yourself or do you blame the politicians for creating a censored media which no one can deny that we now have political censorship in Canada in the public sector and in the United States in the private sector that's actually undeniable the most you could argue is that it's a good thing because if we didn't have political censorship then people would make the wrong choices for example they might become xenophobic racists and suggest well one of the big sources of inflation of housing prices is more people and our birth rate isn't very high so we should probably close down immigration to a degree and then there will be fewer people competing for the same number of houses.

And you'll even know the sort of propaganda techniques used to make this seem okay like now a home is like you used to have slogans like home is where the heart is well okay if you said to someone I live in a house that would mean a home on detached land right if you said you lived in an apartment that's a home but you know someone saying they're going home when most of us lived in detached houses it was normal to live in an attached House apartments were what you lived in if you rented or if you were in the West end or something. A language is never black and white but now we have people calling a one-bedroom condo a home. Will know home tends to have Mom Dad and a child or two a dog some chickens cow whatever it has something more than a place for you to watch Netflix between your shifts at your dead end job that will never buy you a home...

Maybe leave? Why do so many fight so hard to remain in this overrated city? I was listening to a guy praise Vancouver for its microbreweries, there are microbreweries in Mumbai and Hanoi! I've seen them. They're everywhere, there's nothing special about microbreweries anymore. Is it nature? It's BC, every city is close to nature. Food culture? Learn to cook. I sometimes feel like I'm in a cult compound with delusional cultists. The cost of living is not going to go down, ever!

"coveted market" ?

Jun 3, 2021 at 4:13pm

I live in Vancouver BC, the town I was born in, not a "coveted market", which sounds repulsive by the way. I have no desire to own, but when my sub-standard housing is eventually demolished I plan on becoming a camper dwelling nomad. I have pretty much aged out of urban life and suburban life in some jerks basement has no appeal so it's going to be the permanent camping trip for me.

Live in a van now, and save as much as you can. Or blow most of your earning on rent- and live in a van when you are old and really shouldn't be.
If you look around, there are small properties to be had for very cheap- in the Kootenays, Cariboo, Shuswap etc. Then slowly improve the lot, build a cabin, etc. even if it takes a few years.
In small towns on the Prairies they will give you an old house in a tiny town. The US has cheap property.
Other than the lottery, marrying rich, moving to SE Asia, or somehow getting a primo job- those are your only options.

My parents are old, like 80+. They own their own home and thank god they do. But even with a home, they still stress about money. It sometimes feels like you can never have enough money. It’s a huge wake up call: I don’t want to be 80+, too old to work, too vulnerable to be isolated, and always dreaming of more money. Living in a van at 80+ years does not seem to be a good idea either and I’m pretty sure it would shorten your life. Probably buying a home elsewhere is better. Vancouver real estate is stupidly overpriced.

It's not home "ownership" that's the issue..

It's being subject to the whims of whoever owns the condo/apartment/house you're living in. It's a scary thing to not have that security.
